Case Studies

There is a tremendous amount of work being carried out within ATU, throughout the country, and around the world. Below, you will find a wealth of practical examples that can help you see how UDL can be applied in your own practice.
National John Kelly Awards: The John Kelly Award for Universal Design in Further and Higher Education recognises the innovative practice of teaching staff in further and higher education engaging with the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) framework to deliver a more inclusive learning experience for their students. The award aims to celebrate and promote the use of UDL in further education and higher education settings. The awards are named after the late Professor John Kelly, former Registrar of UCD and founding Chair of AHEAD in recognition of his pioneering work.

The awards are targeted at practitioners who have demonstrated their emergent commitment to UDL by undertaking the Digital Badge for Universal Design in Teaching & Learning and making exciting changes to their practice above and beyond their initial redesign. Currently, there are two award categories (i). Individual awards and (ii.) Collaborative Awards. In 2022, the first Collaborative award competition was held and ATU were the winners of this prestigious award. Seven academic members of staff in the University have been finalists since 2019, which shows our continued commitment to embedding UDL practices into programmes of learning. Below you can view the various award winning and finalists' presentations.
