Advance HE Fellowship


Advance HE fellowship demonstrates a commitment to professionalism and provides recognition of practice, impact and leadership in teaching and learning. 

Advance HE Fellowship award four categories of fellowship that recognise your role in teaching and/or supporting higher education learning: 

These four categories reflect the diverse roles of those who teach and support learning in higher education, from positions where teaching and learning is only part of the role, to senior professionals with strategic impact on teaching and learning at an organisational, national or international level. 

Fellowships are awarded based on evidence of personal professional practice that meets the requirements of the Professional Standards Framework 2023 (PSF 2023), the standards framework for the higher education sector. The category of fellowship you can apply for will depend on which of the four Descriptors of the PSF 2023 is most appropriate to your practice and professional experience.

ATU ENGAGE: ADVANCE HE FELLOWSHIP SUPPORT SCHEME

ADVANCE HE FELLOWSHIP SUPPORT SCHEME 

The ATU ENGAGE scheme supports ATU educators in achieving an Advance HE Fellowship, which is an internationally benchmarked professional recognition of high-quality practices, impact and leadership in teaching and learning. 

ATU ENGAGE provides the opportunity for all staff with a teaching and learning role to develop professionally by reflecting on and articulating the effectiveness of their and the Professional Standards Framework for Teaching and Supporting Learning in Higher Education 2023 (PSF) 

WHO SHOULD JOIN ATU ENGAGE? 

Application for an Advance HE Fellowship through participation in ATU ENGAGE is recommended for: 

  • early-career staff or those whose teaching and learning support function forms only part of their role (Associate Fellowship) 
  • more experienced staff who can demonstrate effective and sustained teaching and support of high-quality learning (Fellowship) 
  • educators who influence the teaching and learning practice of colleagues (Senior Fellowship) 
  • leaders with strategic impact on teaching and learning at an organisational, national or international level (Principal Fellowship) 

PRINCIPLES UNDERPINNING ATU ENGAGE  

ATU supports educators in developing their teaching and learning practice.  

  • ATU facilitates educators to effectively support ATU students through a collaborative, learner-centred, inclusive model of practice. 
  • ATU promotes professional dialogue on teaching and learning, within communities of practice at ATU and beyond, in order to inform, develop and enhance practice. 

ATU staff have gained a category of Advance HE Fellowship to date. The ATU ENGAGE scheme will help to ensure that this number grows to reflect our sustained commitment to high-quality teaching and learning.

  • Demonstrates commitment to learning, teaching and the student experience, through engagement in a practical process that supports research, reflection and development 
  • Consolidates personal development and evidences professional practice / influence / strategic impact in HE 
  • Recognised and valued internationally 

Successful applicants are entitled to identify expertise with post-nominal letters – AFHEA / FHEA / SFHEA / PFHEA 

WHICH FELLOWSHIP SUITS YOU?

APPLYING FOR FELLOWSHIP 

1. COMMITTING TO ENGAGE 

  • Firstly, please note that Dr John O’Callaghan SFHEA, Academic Writing Centre, Sligo, is available to advise and support participants throughout ENGAGE and the application process. Please email engage@atu.ie . 
  • Consult the ATU ENGAGE Handbook (which will be available soon) for an overview of the Fellowship scheme and application process.  
  • Please attend the appropriate briefing session on the Fellowship(s) in which you are interested. Briefings will provide detailed on the PSF, the specific demands of each Fellowship, the application process and the ongoing support offered through ENGAGE.
  • Formally register on ENGAGE by completing the ENGAGE Scheme Registration Form (emailed to briefing session participants). Once registered, you will be invited to join the ENGAGE VLE / Team. 

2. MAKING YOUR CASE – 

  • Demonstrate to the ENGAGE Scheme Panel that you can meet the criteria for your category of Fellowship. As you compile evidence and draft your submission, ENGAGE will provide ongoing support. 

Step 4: ENHANCE Scheme on-going support sessions 

Regular support is available and advertised through the ENGAGE SharePoint site. 

Again, please note that Dr John O’Callaghan SFHEA, Academic Writing Centre, Sligo, is available to advise and support participants throughout ENGAGE and the application process. 

In addition, ENGAGE provides individual / group mentoring (mentors hold the category of Fellowship for which the mentee is applying).
