Information

ATU Galway is holding a mathematics talk and workshop for primary and secondary school children during Maths Week. Our speakers are Tiago Hirth and Jennifer Gallagher. Tiago is from the Ludus Association for recreational maths in Portugal, which is one of the top maths outreach groups in Europe. Jennifer is a postdoctoral researcher in ATU Galway.

Secondary School Students

Tiago presents “Brain Teasers and puzzles, from the Middle Ages to modern-day science”. Can you match the wits of the Carolingian court? In this highly interactive talk, the audience will embark on a journey through time and space, one problem at a time. You’ll meet prominent scholars who shaped the mathematics curricula for centuries to follow, as well as others who simply revelled in the joy of mathematics. We'll skip the textbooks and focus on the entertainment these thinkers found in mathematics.

Following this, Jennifer invites the students to a demonstration exploring the link between maths and music. Emphasising the harmony between numerical patterns and musical notes, this event is part of a broader project dedicated to inclusivity within physics. The aim of the demonstration is to reveal the universal language uniting these disciplines, fostering a deeper appreciation for the interconnected beauty of maths and music.

Primary School Students

ATU Sligo: registration for the primary school talk at 10am on Tuesday is full.

Tiago will facilitate a workshop on Mathematical Board Games. David Hilbert reportedly said that mathematics is a game played according to simple rules with meaningless marks on paper. In this session, we take the inverse approach and move from games to mathematics by exploring a set of abstract games featured in the Portuguese Mathematical Games Championship, which has attracted players since 2004. These games include Hex, Slimetrail, Conane, and many more. Everyone will have the opportunity to play and more importantly, how to think strategically. Join us for a friendly competition in mathematical games.
