Course Overview

This programme is appropriate for learners with no prior knowledge of French who wish to gain the basic skills and insights necessary to communicate in French within a professional context. Their learning will be based around the context of the culture of French-speaking countries. Upon successful completion of this programme, students will be deemed to have reached level A1+ of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

1	French for the Workplace 1 This module is appropriate for learners with little or no prior knowledge of French who wish to gain the basic skills and insights necessary to communicate in French within a professional context. Their learning will be based around the context of the culture of French-speaking countries. Upon successful completion of this module, students will be deemed to have reached level A1+ of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Learning Outcomes 1. Conduct a very basic, work-related conversation. 2. Extract the main points from simple texts and write short summaries in English. 3. Follow a range of basic, work-related conversations and extract the main points. 4. Demonstrate awareness of the professional and cultural context of French-speaking regions and countries. 5. Demonstrate oral competency in a workplace setting.	10	Mandatory

Recommended Study Hours per week

This is a 10 credit module which will involve approximately 250 hours of learner time over the semester.

Examination and Assessment

100% continuous assessment of written, oral and aural skills which will include a project

On-Campus Attendance Requirement

Students will be required to attend on-campus once for assessment purposes.

Progression

Students may consider progressing to the Certificate in French for the Workplace 2 on successful completion of this course.

Entry Requirements

Grade O6/H7 or better in five Leaving Certificate subjects including English or Irish and Mathematics with a minimum of 160 points. English or Irish with a minimum grade of O6/H7 or better meets the English or Irish entry requirement. Mathematics with a minimum grade of O6/H7 or F2 or better meets the minimum mathematical entry requirement. Mature candidates (23 years of age or older by 1st January in the proposed year of entry) are exempted from the standard.
