This is an introductory module that explores both Anatomy and Physiology, with a distinctive sports emphasis. The body will be examined with respect to its various systems and their interaction when participating in sports and physical activity.

1. Appropriately utilise anatomical and physiological terms;
2. Identify the cells, tissues and organs involved in the body systems presented within this module.
3. Describe the structures and physiological functions of the major systems of the human body.
4. Explain the physiological responses of the musculo-skeletal system and cardiovascular system to exercise and training.
5. Relate the role of the nervous system to sports and physical activity.
6. Describe the characteristics of body mass – muscle, bone and fat values in the average male and female, and examine adaptations that occur as a result of exercise and training.

This module explores the significance of physical activity in relation to health, fintess and well-being. Learners will be provided with the underpinning knowledge and skills to perform assessments and provide clients with feedback pertaining to their health and fitness.

1. Define each of the health-related components of physical fitness and discuss the benefits of improved fitness for children and adults, including factors that affect fitness and barriers to participation.
2. Identify physical activity guidelines for children and adults to realize health, fitness and performance goals as recommended by National, European and International organisations.
3. Describe the relationship between physical activity, nutrition and stress on overall health and wellbeing.
4. Discuss the requirements of a Health and Fitness professional in safeguarding the health, safety and welfare of the client, (children and adults) including legal and ethical responsibilities as set down by EuropeActive and EREPS code of ethical practice.
5. Evaluate the health and fitness status of clients and refer to other professionals where appropriate. Adopt a client orientated approach and asses performance against predetermined criteria.
6. Safely administer a range of health and fitness assessments in a client orientated manner, interpret the data obtained and compare results against predetermined criteria and provide feedback.

This module introduces the concept of physical literacy and conceptual frameworks that underpin participation in pedagogy, exercise and sport. The module provides students with the knowledge and skills to develop fundamental movement skills in an optimum learning environment.

1. Define physical literacy and discuss its value to contemporary society
2. Describe both the LISPA and LTAD models and their relevance to pedagogy, exercise and sport
3. Identify and explain coaching styles, principles and objectives
4. Plan, deliver and evaluate a lesson/session for stage 1 (Active Start and Fundamentals stages of the Long-Term Athlete Development

This module introduces learners to the wider societal context in which sport and leisure are experienced, and explores the breadth of their reach and impact o n modern culture . Learners will examine and debate issues and controversies that arise including the commercialisation of sport, the use of performance enhancers, aggression and violence on the field of play and amongst spectators , with a view to deepening their understanding of the social origins of sport and leisure and their own roles as future leaders in the field.

The aim of this module is to provide learners with the knowledge, skills and practice in designing and delivering safe and effective exercise programmes for a range of clients including children and adults.

1. Describe the significance of the principles of exercise prescription in developing each of the components of fitness including necessary modifications in: frequency, intensity, time, type, volume, progression and adherence to meet PA guidelines for health, fitness and performance.
2. Discuss the adaptations incurred with different types of training and modes of exercise in developing each of the components of fitness for different types of clients.
3. Demonstrate the underpinning knowledge and skills to undertake a health appraisal and when to refer to other relevant professions in line with industry standards.
4. Prescribe a safe and appropriate six -week training programme and review the programme against the clients original goals.
5. Demonstrate the skills necessary to deliver a training session to a healthy client or a client with unique needs and review your performance against industry standards.
