Atlantic Technological University (ATU) sponsored award for the "Best use of technology for sharing understanding of a subject or issue" at the 60th BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition has been claimed by overall winner Seán O'Sullivan, a secondary school student from Coláiste Chiaráin, Croom, Co Limerick.

The award, presented by Dr Orla Flynn, President of ATU, was in recognition of Seán's outstanding project titled 'VerifyMe: A new approach to authorship attribution in the post-ChatGPT era.' His project explores the development of artificial intelligence (AI) to expose if a writer is using AI software such as ChatGPT.  Seán's innovative work stood out in the senior age category (17-19 years old) of the BT Young Scientist event, which he won on Saturday 13 January.

Dr Flynn congratulated the winning student on his work, "We are delighted to give this award to Seán O'Sullivan for his exceptional project. The BT Young Scientist event aligns perfectly with ATU's vision and values, and it's an honour for us to support and celebrate the next generation of innovators and scientists."

ATU marked its first-time participation in the event by sponsoring the award, showing its commitment to fostering technological innovation and education in STEM fields.

Fiona Kelly, Marketing Manager for ATU, added, "ATU's participation and supporting sponsorship role at the BT Young Scientist event marks a new direction for the university. ATU's reach goes beyond our regional borders and having a presence at this event demonstrates the national interest in the university. ATU's 9 campuses offer 240 CAO programmes, and this event provides ATU with the opportunity to promote the wide range of programmes available at the university to a large audience of 17,000 attendees. It is incredible for ATU to be part of this national and internationally prestigious event."

The BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition celebrated its 60th anniversary this year, making it an even more special occasion for ATU's inaugural participation.
