Visas and Immigration
Do I need a visa to study in Ireland?
Not all non-EU students need a visa to study in Ireland. Please visit the Irish Immigration Service website to determine if you require a visa or not. If cannot find the answer to this question, please contact the ATU Global team who will be happy to assist.
How do I apply for a visa?
You can apply for a visa through the Irish Naturalisation and Immigration Service (INIS) online application system. To apply and for more information on the visa application process, please visit the How to Apply for a Study Visa webpage on the Irish immigration service website.
What documents are required for the visa application?
Required documents include a valid passport, a recent passport-sized photograph, a letter of acceptance from ATU, evidence of payment of the visa application fee, proof of sufficient funds, and medical insurance.
When should I start my visa application?
You can normally apply for a visa up to 3 months before your course start date. Visa applications can take up to 8 weeks to be processed so we recommend applying early.
Do I need to register with immigration after arriving in Ireland?
Students from outside of the EU/EEA will need to register with immigration within 90 days of arriving in Ireland. Your registration certificate is known as an Irish Residence Permit (IRP). You will need to renew your registration for each year of your course. Working in Ireland
Can I work whilst studying?
Yes, students can work up to 20 hours per week during term time and 40 hours per week during holidays. Please see the What do I need to do after arriving? – Immigration Service Delivery webpage for further information.
Is it possible to stay in Ireland after I have graduated?
The Third Level Graduate Scheme (Stamp 1G) provides non-EEA students with an opportunity to remain in Ireland after completing their studies for the purpose of seeking graduate level employment. The scheme is open to students who have studied in Ireland and completed a degree at NFQ level 8, level 9 or above. Please see ATU’s Stay Back Visa webpage for more information.
How do I get a Personal Public Service (PPS) number?
If you need a PPS number you will need to make an online application to the Department of Social Protection. You will need to provide evidence of your identify, your address in Ireland and the reason that you require a PPS number. How do I apply?

When do applications open and close?

What are the entry requirements for international students?

What are the English entry requirements for international students?
ATU accept a wide range of English language qualifications. For more information, please visit our English Language and Entry Requirements webpage
Can I apply before I have completed my final exams?
You can make an application before you have completed your final exams or English language qualification. However, you will need to provide your results before you can receive a full unconditional offer.
English is not my first language, can I still apply?
Yes, but you will need to provide evidence of your English Language competency through an approved qualification. Further information about accepted qualifications and grade requirements is available on our English Language and Entry Requirements webpage
Does ATU have a university entrance exam?
No but applicants must meet the academic and English language requirements of the course they have applied to.
Can I transfer credits from another institution?
Yes, credit transfers are possible but subject to evaluation by the admissions office. Please contact the ATU Global team for more information.
Are there specific entry requirements for different courses?
Yes, individual courses may have specific entry requirements which will be listed on individual course webpages.
Do you offer an international foundation course or pre-university preparation course?
No. Unfortunately, we do not currently offer an international foundation programme.
Do you offer English Language preparatory or pre-sessional courses?
No. Unfortunately, we do not currently offer English Language preparatory or pre-sessional courses. All our courses are delivered in English and applicants must provide evidence of their language competency through an accepted English language qualification.
Important Information
Is health/medical insurance necessary?
Students from outside the EU/EEA are required to have private medical insurance during their time in Ireland. Students are responsible for purchasing and renewing their own health insurance. For more information, please visit the Irish Immigration Service website
How do I get to the ATU campuses?
All ATU campuses are accessible by bus and car from Dublin Airport. Additionally, ATU offer a free airport collection service which brings students from Dublin Airport to their campus of study free of charge. More information on this will be provided at induction.
Accommodation and Student Life
What are the accommodation options?
Multiple student accommodation options are available, including purpose-built student villages, private rentals and digs. For more information, please visit ATU’s Student Accommodation webpage
What is the cost of living in Ireland?
The cost of living includes accommodation, food, transport and other personal expenses. It varies depending on lifestyle but generally ranges between €10,000 and €15,000 per academic year.

Do ATU offer an induction for international students?
Yes, we have an induction specifically for international students. This includes a pre-departure induction and a post-arrival induction. More information will be shared with students closer to the date of arrival.
