Nihal Edfodil
Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence

Tell us a little bit about yourself and what led you to choosing your course?
My name is Nihal ElFodil and I used to be a student in dental science, who studied three years out of a 6 years programme. While I deeply respect the field, I couldn’t shake off the feeling that it wasn’t where my true passion lay.
My original fascination had always been with the IT sector. The thrill of coding, problem-solving, and innovation captivated me. Despite my initial detour into dental science, this interest never changed.
I made the bold decision to pivot, leaving behind a path I had invested years into, to pursue IT-related courses that aligned with my newfound interest in AI. The concept of machines learning from data and adapting in ways that mimic human intelligence captivated me to choose an AI related course. This transition wasn’t without its challenges, but it felt like a return to my true self. Every step forward now feels like a step closer to realising my potential.
What are your favourite modules on the course?
My favourite modules on the course are Machine Learning, Big Data, and Scripting in Python. Machine Learning fascinates me because it is all about training systems to learn and adapt, which feels like unlocking the future of technology. Big Data is equally exciting as it is about cleaning and analysing vast amounts of information to uncover trends, patterns and insights that drive innovation. Lastly, Scripting in Python stands out because it’s practical and gives me the tools to build solutions efficiently. These modules not only challenge me but also prepare me for real-world applications in IT and AI, making them the highlights of my learning experience.
Is there anything else about the course that you particularly enjoy or find beneficial?
Beyond the modules, I particularly enjoy the practical projects integrated throughout the modules. These projects not only help me develop hands-on skills but also provide numerous opportunities to present my work in front of peers and instructors. I find presenting incredibly rewarding as it enhances my communication skills and allows me to share my ideas and insights with others.
Another aspect I love is the 1-year placement in the third year. This opportunity allows me to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world settings, gaining invaluable industry experience and networking opportunities. It’s a chance to bridge the gap between academia and professional life, making me more confident and prepared.
What is the best thing about your course that you think new applicants should know?
One of the best things about my course that I think new applicants should know is its strong emphasis on practical learning. Throughout the programme, we engage in numerous projects and assignments that may as well simulate real-world scenarios, allowing us to apply theoretical concepts to practical problems. This not only enhances our understanding but also prepares us for the challenges we will face in the future. We develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills, which are essential in today’s fast-paced tech industry. This blend of practical experience and theoretical knowledge makes the course both engaging and effective, offering a comprehensive learning experience that prepares students for success.
If you were speaking with a first year student about to start your course, what advice would you give them?
I would emphasize the importance of embracing curiosity and constant learning, as the field can be overwhelming due to its rapid advancements. Learning by doing is crucial by applying concepts to real-world projects. Building a support network is also vital, don’t hesitate to ask for help from peers or professors, as collaboration enhances learning and makes the journey more enjoyable. Finally, remember that your ability to explain complex ideas simply is just as important as your technical skills, so practice presenting your findings in an accessible way. By following these principles, I believe any student can navigate the exciting world of Data Science and AI with confidence and enthusiasm.
If you are involved in sport, volunteering, working or have other passions you pursue outside of your academic life, can you tell us about that?
Outside of my academic life, I have been actively involved in a variety of impactful roles that demonstrate my leadership and passion for innovation. At the Donegal Intercultural Platform, I contributed as a paid interpreter for Arabic and French, organised English classes, tutored beginners, and facilitated events like Family Day and Africa Day. I was also part of a youth-focused research project called The Instep Project and served as a temporary secretary for Women of the World Donegal. At the Startup Bootcamp in CoLab Letterkenny, I was the youngest team leader to be accepted with my business idea, guiding a team in developing and presenting our concept successfully. Additionally, I participated in Ireland’s National AI Challenge as the only undergraduate student from ATU Letterkenny on a team composed of lecturers and master’s students from ATU Sligo. Together, we developed an award-winning platform for real-time bias detection in drug reviews, showcasing the potential of ethical AI solutions.
What are your plans after ATU and any long-term goals you are aiming for?
In the long term, I aim to continue my studies lead projects that integrate AI with other domains like dental science for example to drive innovation in these areas.
