Business and ICT

Name: Lana Lisman
Programme: Business and ICT
ATU Campus: Sligo Campus
- Where are you from (town and school)?
I’m originally from Moldova, but I’ve been living in Sligo for over 10 years now. It’s where I’ve built my family and created a life—we proudly call it home.
- Tell us a little bit about yourself and what led you to choosing your course
I’ve always had an interest in understanding how organisations function and how technology supports business operations. That led me to first study Business at Level 6, and now I’m completing a Level 8 degree in Business and ICT at ATU. I’m passionate about public service and helping communities, which influenced both my course and career choices.
- Tell us why you chose ATU
I chose ATU because of its excellent reputation and strong connections with local employers and public services. The course offerings are practical and relevant, and the support from lecturers and staff is fantastic.
- What do you like about life in your campus location (people, food, accommodation, scenery etc.)?
Life in Sligo is great—the people are very welcoming and friendly. There’s a strong sense of community, and the town itself is beautiful, surrounded by mountains and beaches. It’s a great place to live and study.
- What advice would you give to a student thinking about coming to ATU?
Go for it! ATU offers a supportive learning environment and practical courses that prepare you well for the working world. Don’t be afraid to ask questions or get involved in what the college has to offer—it really makes a difference.
- What do/did you enjoy most about your course?
I enjoy the mix of business subjects and ICT. It gives me a broad understanding of how technology can be used in business and public services, and the assignments and group work help develop real-world skills.
- If you were speaking with a first-year student about to start your course, what advice/information would you give them?
Stay organised and don’t be afraid to reach out for help if you need it. Get to know your classmates and make use of the resources ATU provides. It’s okay to feel a bit overwhelmed at the start—just take it step by step.
- If you are/were involved in sport, volunteering, working or have other passions you pursue outside of your academic life, can you tell us about that (especially mention any teams, clubs or awards)?
I’ve been actively involved in student life at ATU. I’m proud to be part of the ATU Ambassador Programme, which gave me the opportunity to represent the university and support prospective students. I also took on the role of Secretary for the Mature Students Society, where I worked to build a sense of community and provide support for mature learners like myself.
- What are your plans after graduating?
I plan to continue working in public services, possibly with the HSE or another community-focused organisation. I’m passionate about making a positive difference and using both my business and ICT skills to help others.
