Tell us a little bit about yourself and what led you to choosing your course?

My name is Adam and I’m from Ballintra in Co. Donegal. I chose this course because I’ve always had a strong interest in both subjects. I attended an ATU Mayo Open Day before my CAO deadline, and from the moment I saw how enthusiastic the lecturers were, I knew it was the right place for me.

What are your favourite modules on the course?

My favourite modules would be Earth Processes, Aspects of Irish History, European History, and Ecology. For me, these modules really reflect what I love most about history and geography, and they’re at the core of why I chose this course.

Is there anything else about your course that you particularly enjoy or find beneficial?

One of the things I really enjoy is that your grade isn’t based solely on one final exam. Instead, it’s made up of continuous assessments, which allow you to consistently apply what you’ve learned in lectures and showcase your knowledge and skills over time.

What is the best thing about your course that you think new applicants should know?

The level of support from lecturers is excellent. They really go the extra mile to ensure students have the best possible experience. The teaching feels very personal, which helps build trust and makes it easier to stay motivated, even when things get challenging.

What advice would you give a first-year student starting your course?

I’d advise staying on top of your coursework and trying to absorb as much information as possible. You won’t enjoy every lecture or module, but it’s important to stick with it. Going the extra mile with the required readings can really give you an advantage and help you get more out of your classes.

Tell us about any extracurricular activities or experiences

One of the best parts of my college experience has been being a member of the soccer team. It’s a great way to make friends and create memories that last a lifetime. It’s also how I’ve met so many people during my time here and we always have great craic. And if soccer isn’t your thing, there are plenty of other teams, clubs, and societies to get involved in.

What are your plans after ATU and long-term goals?

I’d like to pursue a career in the environmental sector, as there are plenty of exciting opportunities in that field. In the future, I might return to study for a Master’s in secondary school teaching once I’ve gained more experience and knowledge.
