This module will introduce the learner to the fundamentals of human biology including: 1) the characteristics of the major biomolecules; 2) the structure and function of eukaryotic cells; 3) the structure and function of the major tissue types of the human body; and 4) cell division and genetics.

1. Describe the basic structures and functions of biomolecules.
2. Understand and discuss cell theory and the structure and function of eukaryotic cells.
3. Describe the structures and functions of the major human tissue types.
4. Explain cell division in humans and the principles of genetic inheritance.
5. Demonstrate basic biology laboratory skills including observation of human cells and tissues using light microscopy.

This module aims to introduce students to the science of human health and to discuss the physical and biological factors underlying health and wellbeing. The module will explore the continuum between health and disease and the pathological process associated with common types of disease such as infections, endocrine conditions, neurological imbalances, immune conditions, cancer and genetic disorders. The module will explore the consequence of disease for individuals and populations and introduce broadly epidemiology and its uses in studying human health and disease.

1. Describe the physical and biological factors underlying health and wellbeing.
2. Distinguish between normal and abnormal cellular function with respect to various disease conditions.
3. Discuss how the signs and symptoms of disease result from changes in normal physiology.
4. Outline common diseases affecting health and wellbeing and how disease impacts on function and occupational participation.
5. Discuss epidemiology and population health and the importance of these in health and social care.

This module aims to introduce students to the Dietetic profession, the varied work of the dietitian, and the roles and responsibilities of dietitians. Students will be introduced to the dietitian's standards of professional practice, the professional code of ethics, and evidence-based practice. Students will examine institutional catering systems. The module will provide opportunities for students to develop their interpersonal and communication skills as student dietitians and examine how these apply in a range of practice environments.

1. Describe the unique role, qualities and skills of dietitians within professional healthcare practice.
2. Consider and describe the interaction between the dietitian and other healthcare professionals in a multi-disciplinary team.
3. Demonstrate an awareness of professional and regulatory bodies that regulate the work of dietitians.
4. Demonstrate professionalism, in accordance with regulatory body guidance on conduct and ethics for students and confidentiality.
5. Explore the complementary roles of the catering and dietetic services and describe the procedures in an institutional food provision unit.
6. Explain how relevant IT systems are used to support dietetic practice.

This module introduces the learner to human anatomy and physiology through the study of tissues. Organs and systems. It will explain how homeostasis is maintained within these body systems. The module will familiarize the student with some common disorders of these systems and develop and understanding of immunity in the human body.

1. Describe the anatomical characteristics of human tissues, organs and systems.
2. Describe basic physiological processes of the human body.
3. Discuss the importance of homeostatic mechanisms in maintaining health.
4. Describe the causes and effects of common disorders associated with the various systems in the body.
5. Identify the factors involved in immunity.

This module supports the student in developing the skills and knowledge needed to build effective and appropriate professional relationships as the basis for a range of therapeutic interventions. The module explores the components essential to understanding communication with individuals and groups of service users and carers to enable effective communication that is ethical and supports therapeutic outcomes. To develop students understanding of professional skills such as communication, empathy and trustworthiness required when working with vulnerable groups and as part of a multi-disciplinary team. The module will support students in developing an understanding of person centered communication and how this will frame the way for individuals to begin to take control of their lives and health. This module aims to support the development of compassionate, caring and professional health care professionals and provide a basis for exploration, reflection and evaluation of personal and professional values.

1. Develop and demonstrate appropriate scientific communication skills and employ IT tools in the production of scientific evidence based written material.
2. Recognise the key components of the person centred communication process. Identify the barriers that can arise and demonstrate knowledge of the skills required to overcome these.
3. Discuss the effectiveness of person centred care and communication with patients and service users and the multi-disciplinary team, for the management of complex healthcare needs.
4. Demonstrate techniques to engage and build interpersonal and inter-professional communication skills in a safe environment.
5. Appraise both ones own communication skills and those of others so that appropriate and effective professional relationships can developed with service users and other professionals. Reflect on the range of communication skills and professionalism in order to become a reflective practitioner.

This module aims to develop learners' understanding of mental health disorders and examines the main approaches to understanding social, cultural, psychological and biological factors, attitudes to mental health, interventions and supports. The module focuses on enhancing students' local, national and global understanding of public health patterns and the strategies in place to promote health, and protect physical and mental health, as well developing their professional and personal qualities for engaging in such work.

1. Discuss how health beliefs, behaviour, health practices and health chances are shaped by the historic, socio-cultural, economic, environmental, psychological and policy environments.
2. Describe the development of contemporary and historic approaches to understanding psychological health and think critically about current biomedical classifications of mental health disorders.
3. Consider current evidence-based paradigms involved in promoting self-care and positive mental and physical health.
4. Describe models of and approaches to health promotion in the context of medical, emotional, behavioural, empowerment and social factors, and discuss their application.
5. Reflect on different approaches to promoting the health of individuals and populations.

The module will provide individuals with learning skills that will allow them to undertake meaningful civic engagements. Individuals are required to demonstrate, through submission of the appropriate evidence, that they have been involved in a significant way and for a significant period in extracurricular activities which have enhanced their learning. These activities may be within the Institute and/ or with outside clubs, societies, volunteering, community work and extra-curricular activity in general.
