Tell us a little bit about yourself and what led you to choosing your course?

I am 19 years old, and from a young age, I knew I wanted to pursue a career in healthcare, though I was initially unsure of the exact path. When I moved to Ireland three years ago, I had to complete a PLC course because my academic qualifications from my home country were not recognised for direct entry into medicine or dentistry. During my pre-nursing studies, I explored various healthcare fields, and when the time came to apply for further studies, I discovered the dental nursing course. It immediately resonated with me, as it felt like a meaningful step toward my ultimate goal. That decision led me to ATU Donegal, where I am now pursuing my passion.

What are your favourite modules on the course?

My favourite module is Anatomy and Physiology. I have always been fascinated by the intricacies of the human body and how its various systems function. This module provided an in-depth understanding of the skeletal and nervous systems, particularly focusing on the bones of the face, the nerve supply to the teeth, and their respective functions. Gaining this foundational knowledge has deepened my appreciation for the field of dentistry and its complexities.

Is there anything else about the course that you particularly enjoy or find beneficial?

One of the most valuable aspects of the course is the work placement component. It provides hands-on experience in a clinical setting, allowing me to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world scenarios. Engaging with patients and observing dental procedures first hand has been instrumental in enhancing my skills and confidence. This practical exposure has reinforced my passion for the field and given me invaluable insight into the profession.

What is the best thing about your course that you think new applicants should know?

One of the greatest advantages of this course is its versatility. It provides a strong foundation in dental nursing while also offering opportunities for further specialisation. I could advance my education to become a dental hygienist, orthodontic therapist, or pursue other roles within the field of dentistry. This flexibility allows for my career growth and professional development in various directions.

If you were speaking with a first year student about to start your course, what advice would you give them?

Take every test and assignment seriously, regardless of how much it contributes to your overall grade. Developing strong study habits and maintaining consistency from the start will help you build a solid academic foundation, making it easier to excel as the course progresses.

If you are involved in sport, volunteering, working or have other passions you pursue outside of your academic life, can you tell us about that?

Outside of my academic commitments, I enjoy reading books and watching anime. Both hobbies allow me to relax and immerse myself in different stories, whether through literature or animation.

What are your plans after ATU and any long-term goals you are aiming for?

After completing my studies at ATU, I plan to work as a dental nurse while I secure my citizenship. Once that is achieved, I intend to further my education by studying Dentistry, ultimately pursuing my goal of becoming a dentist.
