Niamh King
Bachelor of Business (Honours) in Business

Tell us a little bit about yourself and what led you to choosing your course?
My name is Niamh King, I am 17 years old and I am studying Business Honours. I took Leaving Cert Accounting but not Junior or Leaving Cert Business and that made me want to learn more about the business world. I specifically chose the course in ATU Letterkenny as I have lived there my whole life and it had the exact course I needed. This course is filled with content to learn and discover more about the business world, I found this course is most suitable for me and I am enjoying every second of it.
What are your favourite modules on the course?
The accounting module for business is definitely one of my favourites. I enjoy working with numbers from a business perspective. Along with that I enjoy the IT related modules such as IT for Business and Business Information System. I’ve learned more about how to use the technological tools given to us and have been taught about the importance of technology within a workplace.
Is there anything else about the course that you particularly enjoy or find beneficial?
The assessments for our modules are very beneficial, especially the likes of IT practicals and business presentation. It allows us to enhance our skills that we will need to use in the business world. It’s a very fruitful and insightful experience for the world of work. Although there is a lot of material, there are online resources to study from. It makes it better for our study and understanding of the topics.
What is the best thing about your course that you think new applicants should know?
The course I am doing is a 3 year course. I will have my honours degree in three years. There is an optional fourth year for work placement and there are career guidance counsellors here at ATU who will prepare you and find a place for your work placement. It allows you to not only graduate with a degree but also some work experience.
If you were speaking with a first year student about to start your course, what advice would you give them?
Definitely attend your lectures and don’t be afraid to ask questions. The staff have been a huge help to me in my learning and they’re more than happy to engage with you. I would also suggest to take advantage of the presentation practicals. You learn more skills along the way as you practice them. And with regards to study, definitely study with friends and help each other out. I book study rooms with my friends all the time and that helps us all so much.
If you are involved in sport, volunteering, working or have other passions you pursue outside of your academic life, can you tell us about that?
We have an ATU gym in An Danlann and it’s so handy to have. I go there very often, by myself or even with my friends and it’s a well-equipped gym. I’m also a part of the Cheer Society which is very enjoyable to be in, I was able to meet some people outside of my course. I didn’t participate much in such activities before but now that I have the opportunity to I’m able to enjoy my experience here at ATU
What are your plans after ATU and any long-term goals you are aiming for?
My plans for the future is the get a long-term job in a business workplace of some sort. So far it’s only my first year but I’m leaning in towards a more management or accounting-based job. I do hope to stay here in Letterkenny but wherever my work opportunities may be, I’m willing to go.
