Senior academics from the UK and Australia visit Galway campus

ATU iHub Manager Turlough Rafferty, Professor Carl Goodyear, University of Glasgow, Michael Marsden, Nottingham Trent University, Professor Abby Cathcart, Queensland University of Technology, Professor Tony Fawcett, Durham University, Professor Gill Knight, University of Wolverhampton, and Dr Billy Bennett, Registrar and Chief Academic Officer, ATU.

Dr Michèle Glacken, Vice-President, Students, Teaching & Learning, says the visit and subsequent discussion on the draft Teaching & Learning Strategy will strengthen and focus the ultimate strategy. “The visiting academics provided the development team with many useful insights based on their varied and significant experience.”

John Andy Bonar, Vice-President Global, says the objective of ATU’s inaugural Global Engagement Strategy is to help provide clear strategic direction for ATU’s internationalisation mission for the next few years.

“Aligned closely with, and supporting ATU’s Strategic Plan (2024-2028) Open Minds, Bright Futures, and building on our successes to date, while taking cognisance of the evolving global context, ATU’s draft Global Engagement Strategy was developed by ATU Global and many other colleagues, with support from Dr Vicky Lewis, a recognised UK based expert in International Education. It was extremely valuable to have the opportunity to meet the Expert Panel from the Advance HE Top Management Programme.

It is hugely beneficial to ATU’s draft Global Engagement Strategy to have their strategic inputs informed by their very significant international experiences from across Australia, Scotland and England. It was a pleasure to engage with the Expert Group, and we are all very appreciative of their valuable and insightful contributions.”

The five academics, from Durham University, Nottingham Trent University, University of Wolverhampton, University of Glasgow and Queensland University of Technology, also visited the Innovation Hub (iHub) and its Medical Imaging Suite.

iHub Manager Turlough Rafferty gave an overview of the key innovation supports across ATU including the university’s four innovation centres, three Technology Gateways and its New Frontiers and EMPOWER entrepreneurship programmes and spoke of Galway’s growing strengths in MedTech and Digital Technologies.

ATU’s iHubs and Technology Gateways provide a connected pathway from early-stage ideas through to commercialisation, supporting entrepreneurs and scaling companies with the facilities, expertise and networks to succeed
