Researcher Andrew McGeever receives Research Ireland Enterprise Fellowship funding

Andrew McGeever, who has been awarded €94,240.65 in funding to support his research as part of the Enterprise Fellowship programme by Research Ireland.

Research Ireland announced €4.4 million to support 46 fellowships across all disciplines under its Enterprise Fellowship programme, which fosters enterprise-engaged research across Ireland.

Andrew McGeever’s project, “Assessing Factors Influencing Recovery and Inflammation Biomarkers in Athletes”, has been awarded €94,240.65 in funding to support his research.

The project focuses on understanding how variables such as sleep, competition, and sex-specific differences affect recovery and inflammation biomarkers in athletes, with the goal of improving injury prevention and athletic performance.

Dr Diarmuid O’Brien, CEO of Research Ireland, said:

The high level of participation in the Research Ireland Enterprise Fellowship programme illustrates a strong appetite across disciplines and sectors for meaningful collaboration between academia and enterprise. This investment supports the mobility and development of research talent by giving researchers experience across both academic and enterprise settings, and enabling the flow of knowledge and skills in both directions.

Andrew commented on the achievement,

“I am delighted to receive Research Ireland Enterprise Fellowship funding to continue my research into athlete recovery and performance. This opportunity allows me to work closely with Orreco Ltd., applying academic research in a real-world enterprise context to generate practical insights that can benefit athletes and sports practitioners.”

Andrew’s fellowship falls under the Placement stream, working directly with Orreco Ltd. to integrate academic research into practical enterprise applications. The project will explore biomarkers of recovery and inflammation, and examine how factors such as sleep quality, training load, and biological sex influence athlete outcomes.

Andrew said, “by combining rigorous research methods with applied enterprise experience, this project aims to deliver actionable recommendations for athletes, coaches, and sports organisations, helping to improve recovery strategies and reduce the risk of injury.”

As part of Research Ireland, funding was allocated to 46 fellowships across 13 Higher Education Institutions in Ireland under its Enterprise Fellowship programme.

Forty distinct enterprise partners are supporting this year’s awardees, spanning small, medium, and large enterprises, both indigenous and international, as well as not-for-profit bodies and charities. This initiative enables researchers to gain experience beyond academic settings, working with enterprise partners to apply research in real-world contexts while fostering knowledge transfer, collaboration, and innovation.
