Project WAVE opens applications for students ready to experience college life and build their future
Project WAVE (Working Towards Academic and Vocational Equity) is offering individuals with Intellectual Disabilities the opportunity to become part of an inclusive and supportive college community at Atlantic Technological University (ATU). Delivered across three ATU campuses — Castlebar, Letterkenny and Sligo — this innovative two-year programme leads to a Level 6 Special Certificate and supports students to develop social, academic and vocational skills in a welcoming higher education environment.
“I wanted this chance to go to college since I was 16 years old and didn’t get it until I was 40 years old – but it has changed my life”.
Project WAVE gives students the opportunity to experience all aspects of college life while learning alongside their peers in inclusive, co-learning environments. Throughout the programme, students build confidence and practical skills in areas including ICT, learning and study skills, equality, diversity and inclusion, health and wellbeing, and employability.
Students also have the opportunity to personalise their learning journey by choosing from a range of elective pathways aligned with their interests and career goals. Pathways include areas such as Design, Engineering, Hospitality, and Early Childhood Care and Education.
Beyond the classroom, Project WAVE encourages students to make the most of campus life through a wide range of extracurricular opportunities. Students can take part in field trips, connect through peer buddy programmes, and become involved in clubs, societies and events across the university community. These experiences support students to build friendships, develop independence and enjoy a full and rewarding college experience.
Students from previous cohorts have already taken part in memorable and meaningful experiences. One highlight included a visit to Leinster House, where students had the opportunity to engage in advocacy activities and learn more about civic participation and inclusion. Through experiences like these, students develop confidence in using their voices, sharing their perspectives and becoming active members of their communities.

In the final semester, students undertake a work placement, giving them the opportunity to gain valuable real-world experience, develop workplace skills and explore future career pathways in a supportive environment.
Project WAVE is designed to empower students to achieve their goals, build independence and discover what is possible through higher education.
Applications are now open.
