ATU students receive national recognition for road safety campaign
Students from Atlantic Technological University (ATU) have received national recognition for a road safety campaign highlighting the devastating consequences of speeding.
The award-winning project formed part of the national Road Safety Reimagined initiative, led by An Garda Síochána and supported by ESB, which challenged students to develop impactful road safety communications.
The competition involved more than 1,000 students from Atlantic Technological University, University of Limerick, Maynooth University, University College Cork, Dublin City University, Technological University of the Shannon, South East Technological University, and Moyross Youth Academy.
Third-year students from the Bachelor of Business in Marketing and Sales at ATU’s Galway City campus, Fionn Kelly, Lorcan O’Grady, Pamela Welby and Rebecca Kerin, received their award at a national showcase hosted by the University of Limerick at the University Concert Hall.
Their campaign was recognised for its visually striking, gaming-inspired concept targeting young male drivers, designed to resonate with a high-risk demographic.
Supported by ATU lecturers Mary McCormack, Lucia Cloonan and Dr Gabriela Gliga, the project involved developing a research-driven campaign targeting drivers aged 18–25.
Mary McCormack, Lecturer, ATU School of Business, said:
This project gave students the opportunity to apply their skills to a real societal issue, demonstrating how marketing can play a powerful role in influencing behaviour and saving lives.
Students described the project as particularly engaging as they were the target audience, and noted its personal significance, as some had experienced the loss of family members and friends to road fatalities.
Working on a real-world brief with national stakeholders, students highlighted how the project enhanced their skills in teamwork, strategic communication and data-driven creative development, while providing valuable experience of professional collaboration.
