ATU Sligo Campus Raises Green Flag for Biodiversity

ATU Sligo Campus celebrated the official raising of its Green Flag for Biodiversity this week, marking another major milestone in its sustainability journey. The award, presented under An Taisce’s Green Campus Programme, means the campus now holds Green Flags for Litter & Waste, Energy, and Biodiversity.

“The flag is not just a symbol of achievement, but an ongoing commitment to protect biodiversity and integrate sustainability into every aspect of campus life,” said Caoimhe Mc Cormack, fourth-year student and Secretary of the Green Campus Committee.

The Green Campus Programme is a student-led initiative empowering higher-education communities to champion sustainability, biodiversity, and environmental stewardship. At ATU Sligo, the Green Campus Committee unites students and staff passionate about driving positive change toward a more sustainable future.

“Receiving the Green Flag for Biodiversity is a reflection of the hard work, creativity, and collaboration of our students, staff, and wider community. It is a commitment not just to sustainability in education but sustainability in everything we do,” added Declan Feeney, Lecturer in the Department of Environmental Science.

The programme embeds sustainability across teaching, learning, research, campus operations, and culture. Recent projects include campus habitat mapping, edible food trails, energy-awareness campaigns, clothing swaps, and the elimination of single-use cups from campus canteens.

In closing the ceremony, Emil Kindl, President of the ATU Sligo Students’ Union, remarked, “Green campus fosters a culture and creates a platform for students to grow. They might not realise it yet, but they are the future leadership of institutions, regions, countries or the world—whatever they wish!”.
