An Atlantic Technological University (ATU) researcher has been selected as a finalist for a European competition bringing together 100 young researchers to develop innovative solutions to some of the continent’s biggest challenges.

Dr Samar Momin, a Research Assistant in ATU’s Department of Building and Civil Engineering and TRIBE-Lab (Transformative Research & Innovation in the Built Environment), will represent ATU at EU TalentOn 2026 in Brest, France, from 7–11 September.

The five-day competition will see researchers from across Europe work in teams on challenges linked to the EU Missions, including climate-neutral and smart cities and adaptation to climate change.

Dr Momin is recognised for his work on a Construct Innovate-funded research project focused on the long-term structural health monitoring of Mass Engineered Timber (MET) buildings in the Irish climate under the guidance of Dr Conan O’Ceallaigh.

Speaking about his selection for EU TalentOn 2026, Dr Momin said:

I am delighted to have been selected as a finalist for EU TalentOn 2026. This is a valuable opportunity to work with researchers and innovators from across Europe, exchange ideas, and contribute to solutions addressing major societal and scientific challenges.

Dr Momin recently completed his PhD in Earthquake Engineering and Structural Dynamics at Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya – BarcelonaTech (UPC), where he was awarded the highest grade (Excellent) with a Cum Laude distinction.

About his research, Dr Momin added:

“My work sits at the intersection of engineering, data, risk, and sustainability, and EU TalentOn 2026 provides a wonderful opportunity to bring this perspective into a wider European innovation setting.”

Dr Conan O’Ceallaigh, Department of Building and Civil Engineering at ATU’s Galway campus, said Samar’s selection reflects his contribution to engineering research and his potential as an emerging researcher.

Samar’s selection as a finalist for EU TalentOn 2026 is a strong recognition of his research potential and his contribution to engineering research at the ATU TRIBE-Lab. His work aligns closely with ATU’s focus on applied research, and he has contributed significantly to the drive to increase sustainability and innovation in the built environment.
