ATU marks Traveller Ethnicity Day 2026 with events across its campuses
Atlantic Technological University (ATU) marked Traveller Ethnicity Day 2026 with a series of events and initiatives across its campuses, celebrating the rich cultural heritage, contributions, and lived experiences of the Traveller community.
A highlight of this year’s programme was a keynote event hosted by ATU Library, featuring acclaimed writer and activist Dr Rosaleen McDonagh in conversation with author Elizabeth Reapy. The engaging discussion explored themes from Dr McDonagh’s recent publications, Contentious Spaces and Settled, as well as broader reflections on identity, rights, and creative expression.
An exhibition curated by BA History and Geography students at ATU’s Mayo Campus presented diverse perspectives on Traveller history and culture, reflecting students’ research and meaningful engagement with community narratives.
Information stands were hosted across several ATU campuses, many in partnership with local Traveller advocacy organisations. These provided staff, students, and visitors with opportunities to learn more about Traveller culture, community supports, and the significance of Traveller Ethnicity Day.
As part of the university’s ongoing commitment to supporting a just transition for marginalised communities, the MOBILISE project marked the month with the launch of a two-part apprenticeship programme in retrofitting, delivered in collaboration with MSLETB and ATU. Traveller apprentices will gain hands-on experience developing innovative retrofit solutions using test mobile home units on the ATU’s Sligo Campus.
Funded by the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland, the MOBILISE project is a collaborative initiative aimed at improving the energy efficiency of pre-owned mobile homes through retrofitting. The project supports environmental sustainability, enhances living conditions, and reduces energy costs for participating households, delivering tangible benefits for the Traveller community.
Sinead Campbell, Traveller and Roma Education Officer at ATU, said:
We are proud to mark Traveller Ethnicity Day across ATU, recognising the rich culture, identity and contributions of the Traveller community. Days like this are about more than celebration-they are about visibility, respect and creating space for meaningful dialogue. Through initiatives like MOBILISE and our ongoing engagement with students and communities, ATU is committed to supporting Traveller participation, progression and inclusion in higher education and beyond.
