Dr Simon Berrow, lecturer at Atlantic Technological University (ATU) and marine biologist, will join writers Alice Kinsella and Philip Hoare for a special Climate Writing Session hosted by the Irish Writers Centre on Wednesday, June 25. The free online event, running from 7.00pm to 8.30pm, is open to writers, readers, and environmental thinkers of all levels who are interested in weaving climate action into their creative practice.
Dr Berrow is CEO of the Irish Whale and Dolphin Group (IWDG), a founding member of the Irish Basking Shark Group, and a central figure in shaping national biodiversity policy.
With more than three decades of research into Ireland’s marine life, Dr Berrow has published over 200 peer-reviewed papers and currently lectures on the Applied Freshwater and Marine Biology degree and various Masters programmes at ATU. He also supervises several PhD candidates. His academic role is complemented by an active presence in environmental advocacy, most recently contributing to the successful campaign to secure legal protection for basking sharks in Irish waters.
Hosted by Mayo-born author Alice Kinsella, the session blends literature and environmental discourse. Kinsella, whose acclaimed work includes Milk: on motherhood and madness and the co-authored Wake of the Whale, brings both a lyrical and activist lens to climate conversations.
Joining Kinsella and Dr Berrow is British non-fiction author Philip Hoare, whose books explore the intersection of human culture and the natural world.
The Irish Writers Centre’s Climate Writing Sessions are designed to help writers of all genres embed positive climate solutions into their creative work. Each 90-minute session offers a mix of author interviews, scientific insight, discussions, and writing exercises. It is part of a broader cultural response to the climate crisis, supported by Dublin UNESCO City of Literature.
This event will particularly appeal to those at the intersection of environmental science and the literary arts—whether emerging writers, seasoned authors, or conservationists seeking new ways to connect with the public.
Booking is free but essential.
