ATU hosts Eurachem Analytical Measurement Competition 2026
Atlantic Technological University (ATU) recently hosted the Eurachem Analytical Measurement Competition (EAMC) 2026, welcoming undergraduate chemistry students from across Ireland.
Now in its 23rd year, the EAMC is a Europe-wide initiative designed to promote excellence in analytical science. It provides third-level students with the opportunity to apply their laboratory skills in a collaborative environment, tackling practical analytical challenges that require accuracy, precision and teamwork.
Teams from universities across Ireland took part, including ATU, Dublin City University, Technological University Dublin, Technological University of the Shannon, Munster Technological University, Southeast Technological University, Trinity College Dublin and University of Galway.
Hosted annually by a partner institution, this year’s event brought students together at ATU’s Galway campus on the Dublin Road, where they applied their skills in a live laboratory setting and highlighted the importance of analytical measurement in industry, research and regulatory settings.
A total of 50 students, competing in 25 teams, took part in a series of laboratory-based challenges designed to test their analytical and problem-solving skills, while reinforcing the importance of quality assurance and best practice in scientific measurement. The competition also provided students with valuable insight into career pathways in the pharmaceutical, forensic, environmental and chemical sectors.

Dr Jean Hughes, Department of Analytical, Biopharma and Medical Science, School of Life and Physical Sciences at Atlantic Technological University, said:
ATU was delighted to host the Eurachem Analytical Measurement Competition 2026 and to welcome undergraduate students from institutions across Ireland. This long-established competition provides an invaluable educational experience, allowing students to apply their analytical knowledge and laboratory training in a real-world setting. By emphasising accuracy, best practice in analytical measurement and effective teamwork, the event supports the development of key competencies required for professional practice in analytical science and related industries, while reinforcing the close alignment between academic training, professional standards and industry expectations.
The winning team was from the University of Galway:
Oliwia Senkowska and Malachy Kinsella, mentored by Dr Stanislas Von Euw.
The runners-up were from Trinity College Dublin:
Nikita Mitrofanovs and Maksymilian Kaluza, mentored by Dr Noelle Scully.
The second runners-up were from Dublin City University:
Annabella Duffy and Onyekachi Ukwuani, mentored by Dr Pat O’Malley.
The event was supported by industry partners including Chanelle Pharma, Medtronic Mason Technology, Complete Laboratory Solutions (CLS), Irish National Accreditation Board (INAB), Institute of Chemistry of Ireland (ICI) and Eurachem Ireland.
