What is a Civil Engineering Apprenticeship?

ATU launched Ireland’s first apprenticeships in Civil Engineering in 2023, with the introduction of the Level 6 Higher Certificate and a Level 7 Bachelor of Engineering. These exciting programmes created an alternative career path to the Civil Engineering profession in Ireland. In 2026, they added to the portfolio with the introduction of the Level 8 Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) degree. These civil engineering apprenticeship programmes are transformational and over time, will bridge the shortfall in supply of engineers in Ireland, providing those skills critical to the delivery of Ireland’s bold infrastructural plans.

Civil engineering is essential to modern infrastructure, encompassing bridges, roads, water systems, and energy networks. These programmes emphasise design and sustainability in structural engineering, transportation, water engineering, and foundation design.

Each year begins with a residential week on campus for project-based learning and networking. This is followed by four days of workplace training each week with the support of an industry mentor and one day of online study per week. In addition, the apprentices are required to attend one lab day on campus per month. Apprentices will also be required to attend campus (3-5 days depending on the year of study) at midterm to facilitate group work and design workshops.

This programme delivers a strong foundation in civil engineering, covering key areas such as structures, geotechnics, transportation, and contemporary construction methods. Throughout the programme, apprentices apply their academic learning directly to real-world projects, gaining valuable hands-on experience.
