Course Overview
The Certificate in the Good Friday Agreement in Practice is designed to upskill public servants in both jurisdictions on the Island of Ireland who have or will be taking up responsibility for implementation of the Good Friday Agreement.
The programme will equip graduates with the necessary knowledge and skills and aims to achieve the following objectives:
Identify and disseminate examples of best practice in cross-border and all-island operations that will improve capacity for cooperation at a strategic level.
Address the obstacles to cross-border working, to ensure a collective contribution to the peace and reconciliation process.
Address longer-term challenges and priorities shared by the two administrations, and any potential obstacles to their contributions and potential solutions.
Improve the capacity for cooperation through the transfer of relevant skills, and make available to relevant personnel in the implementation bodies, sponsoring departments of the two administrations on the island of Ireland and, potentially, to officials in Great Britain.

The in-person sessions will be supplemented with 12 hours directed learning and further supported by independent learning.

This course will be delivered through three separate in-person one-day sessions, equivalent to 24 hours of learning.

Entry Requirements
A Grade O6/H7 or better in five Leaving Certificate subjects including English or Irish and Mathematics with a minimum of 160 points. Maths at F2 is acceptable to meet the minimum Maths entry requirement. Irish at F2 is acceptable to meet the minimum language requirement.
OR
Five different subjects at GCSE grade C or better to include English/Irish and Maths with a minimum of 160 points.
OR
Equivalent qualifications and scores from other countries which will be assessed and scored by the university.
OR
A Pass in any QQI FET Major Award at level 5 or 6.
OR
A Pass in a QQI FET Foundation Certificate, the University of Galway/ATU Foundation Certificate or any Foundation/Access Certificate delivered by the regional cluster (ATU or University of Galway).
Advanced Entry
Applications are welcome from candidates who have successfully completed cognate programmes at a lower level, and who wish to apply for advanced entry. Candidates who wish to apply for advanced entry to this programme apply directly to the university, providing documentation relating to results and programme content. These are assessed, and if appropriate and places are available applicants are admitted at a level appropriate to their prior learning.
Mature Applicants
Applications from mature applicants (aged 23 on or before 1st January of the course commencement year) are welcomed by ATU. A quota of places is reserved for mature applicants. These applicants do not have to meet the Leaving Certificate entry requirements and are considered on an individual basis (previous education, work experience, and demonstration of ability and competence to undertake the programme).

Who Should Apply?
Demand for the programme will come from those public servants in both jurisdictions on the island of Ireland with responsibility for the North-South implementation bodies under Strand of the 1998 Good Friday/Belfast Agreement, and for new or junior staff members of the implementation bodies.
This programme will also be of interest to those involved in bodies and organisations operating on a North-South, cross-border or all-island basis, including the North South Ministerial Council, Waterways Ireland, Food Safety Promotion Board, InterTrade Ireland, SEUPB, The Language Body and Foyle, Carlingford and Irish Lights Commission.
