Course Overview

This programme aims to develop English language and communication skills in the non-English speaking learner in order to enhance those skills required to transition to life in Ireland.

Delivery will be blended and will include both face to face classes and online delivery. The teaching approach employed will include a variety of techniques including lectures, case studies, group discussions, group role-play, presentations and reflection. Guest lectures will also form a key part of the programme, imparting their expertise to learners. Throughout the programme there will be high levels of both collaborative learning and individual work, with learners encouraged to apply theory to real world experiences and situations.

1	Fundamentals Of English For Academic Learning This module aims to equip non Anglophone students at undergraduate level with the relevant skills, knowledge and competence to communicate in English at a level that will allow successful transition into a third-level academic environment in Ireland. The content of the course will be informed by the particularneeds of student groups. Learning Outcomes 1. Display awareness of Irish society and culture including the preferred communication norms 2. Source, read, understand and reference a range of credible academic documents 3. Demonstrate skills in planning, drafting and editing written work at an appropriate level 4. Exchange information orally in a range of formal and informal situations 5. Give and receive feedback on personal and peer work 6. Prepare and deliver a PowerPoint presentation to a group of peers	10	Mandatory

Recommended Study Hours per week

Students can expect to allow for independent learning of 14 hours per week.

Examination and Assessment

Coursework in this module will consist of a mix of assessment approaches such as class tests, practicals, presentations, group work and integrated assessments. There is no final exam.

On-Campus Attendance Requirement

Attendance is required on campus for 3 hours per week on average.

Entry Requirements

Candidates may be admitted to the programme on the grounds of mature years (over 23 by 1st January in the proposed year of entry). RPL will be considered in accordance with the Quality Assurance of ATU.

Alternatively, 5 O6/H7 in the Leaving Certificate, to include Mathematics (F2/O6/H7) and either Irish or English (O6/H7) OR QQIFET Level 5, or equivalent qualification.

Any applicant applying based on non EU awards/qualifications must apply directly to the International Office at ATU Donegal. In order to be considered for entry international applicants must present:
A qualification that is recognised as being equivalent to a Level 5 Irish qualification and have an IELTS qualification of 5.5 minimum.
