This module aims to introduce learners to the emerging world of social robots and their growing use in care, health, education and community settings. It will help learners understand what social robots are, how they work, and why they may be significant for the future of human-centred services.

The module supports learners to explore the opportunities and challenges social robots present, including practical use, ethical questions, regulation and wider social impact. It is designed to build confidence, critical understanding and AI literacy for those who may encounter these technologies in their work or professional interests.

1. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the nature, characteristics, core technological principles and typologies of social robots.
2. Analyse the social, organisational and sectoral contexts in which social robots are deployed, with particular reference to care, health, education and related service settings.
3. Evaluate the benefits, limitations, risks and workforce implications associated with the use of social robots in professional practice.
4. Critically evaluate the ethical, legal and regulatory issues arising in relation to the design, deployment and governance of social robots, including relevant obligations under the EU AI Act.
5. Apply and integrate knowledge from technology, society, regulation and futures thinking in order to construct and defend evidence-based, critically grounded perspectives on the future role of social robots in care and health contexts.
