Course Overview
Our Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Bioanalytical Science option provides a clear knowledge of the underlying concepts behind modern bioanalytical techniques and the application of these techniques in the areas of biotechnology, biopharmaceutical, and related industries and in environmental analysis.
You will gain technical competence in analytical biochemical, genetic, immunological and microbiologically-based analytical methodologies and the skills and knowledge required to work in the biotechnology, and biopharmaceutical industries as well as in state scientific agencies.
On completion of this course you will have specific knowledge and understanding of specific theories, concepts and principles in biopharmaceutical processes, industrial microbiology, molecular biology and analytical science. You will have acquired methods for generating, processing, interpreting and presenting information in those areas. You will also have the ability to identify, define and resolve complex problems through biopharmaceutical processes. This programme also meets the registration requirements of the Teaching Council of Ireland in respect of the curricular subject Biology.

Testimonial
I chose Bioanalytical science at ATU Donegal as I had an interest in Biology at school. Having been out of education for a year prior to enrolment, the idea of starting a new course was daunting. However, the small class sizes, in combination with the helpful and supportive lectures provided an ideal environment, within which, I soon felt at home. The course itself provided a thorough grounding in both chemical and biological sciences. Perhaps the most valuable aspect of my experience at ATU was the hands-on lab experience from day one. This allowed me to develop my lab skills and become competent with the usage of scientific instruments. Furthermore, the final year of the degree entailed a research project, whereby I was provided with the opportunity to conduct research on a topic of interest, with the help and guidance of a supervisor. This experience sparked my interest and enthusiasm for research. Since then, I have proceeded to undertake a Masters in Translational Medicine and a PhD in Biomedical Science at Queen’s University Belfast. My experience at ATU Donegal has provided me with the fundamental skills required for a career in research and provided the backbone of this success. It’s been a challenging and exciting journey and I would encourage anyone interested in a career in science to choose the science courses on offer. For me, undertaking the Bioanalytical science degree has been hugely rewarding and a genuinely life changing experience.
