Course Overview
This degree award is an option from AU371 Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Agriculture (Common Entry) programme. Students study common modules in their first three years of study before choosing Animal and Crop Science or Environmental Management as their degree award option in Year 4.
This Animal and Crop Science award prepares you for a career in the Agri-Business sector, specialising in animals and crop science. Students study sustainable agriculture, animal welfare, including reproduction and genetics, agricultural business and economics, crop science and mechanisation. Students also undertake a research project in their final semester.

Introduction to AgricultureThe learner will be introduced to the husbandry and care of animals and crops used in agriculture. They will develop an understanding of the importance of careful husbandry to prevent disease being introduced into the agricultural system. Fundamentals of Biology and ChemistryThis module will introduce the learner to the fundamentals of biology including the structure and functions of prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells and the characteristics of the major biological macromolecules. Argicultural Business ManagementThis module incorporates the theory and practice of accounting, finance, and marketing to build on and complement modules which describe agricultural systems. Students will develop an understanding of the Farm financial planning process, performance indicators and the Common Agricultural Policy. Tax implications for the farm will also be covered as will the new technologies within for farm software. Learning Outcomes 1. Complete a detailed whole farm financial and logistical planning exercise, including farm profit analysis and the use of key performance indicators. |

Agricultural MicrobiologyThis module will introduce the student to the fundamentals of microbiology relevant to agriculture. The student will be introduced to the different microorganisms and gain a basic understanding of how microorganisms grow, can be affected by their environment and can be controlled. The module will have both theory and practical elements and the student will gain a useful understanding of the significance of microbes in areas such as milk, meat, silage and water quality. Agriculture and Food TechnologyThis module is a study of the ingredients used and the principles of the processes involved in the production of the main foods produced by the Irish agricultural sector, milk, meat, cereals, fruit and vegetables. It involves a study of the processes used to preserve and maintain the quality of milk, meat, fruit, vegetables, cereal, fruit and vegetable products. It introduces students to some of the basic food technology concepts and unit operations required for working in the food industry and how food processing operations are controlled and monitored.
