This is a specialised ordinary degree programme that focusses on the principles, techniques and advanced knowledge related to ﬁre safety and ﬁre protection engineering. The rationale for pursuing a BSc in Fire Safety Engineering can be driven by several factors including career advancement, specialisation, regulatory compliance, public safety, disaster preparedness, demand for experts and environmental concerns.

The BSc in Fire Safety Engineering aims to satisfy the growing demand for graduates with the skills required to work on areas such as: safety and risk mitigation, complex structures, changing ﬁre and Building Regulations, environmental requirements, growing complexity of industrial installations, public awareness, and emergency response and disaster management.

This BSc in Fire Safety Engineering will help address the skills gap that currently exists in the Fire Safety Engineering industry, ensuring that there are enough trained professionals to meet the growing demands of industry and regulation.

Contact hours per week are typically 6 hours. A further 18 hours per week of independent learning is also recommended.

Modules are assessed using a mix of continuous assessment and on-campus examinations. Continuous assessment may include a range of assessment methods including:
– Individual Assignments
– Group Assignments
– Online class/lab tests
– Presentations/demonstrations

The course is delivered online with mandatory laboratory attendance of one day in May for each group of five students There will also be a mandatory, off-campus visit (possibly in June) to a fire service training facility.
In addition, written examinations (3 -4) will be held on-campus (Letterkenny or Galway) in December, March and June.

On successful completion of this programme, graduates can apply for progression to the Bachelor of Science (Hons ) in Fire Safety Engineering Level 8 (Blended) programme.

Applicants are required to have an NFQ Level 6 minimum qualification in a cognate construction/ engineering discipline such as Civil Engineering, Building Services or Fire Engineering; Construction Management, Building Surveying or Architectural Technology.

Applicants who do not have a cognate qualification but have significant relevant experience may also be eligible for consideration via Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) which includes a combination of education, training, and work experience. RPL are be considered in accordance with ATU’s RPL Policy.

Applicants from Local Authority Fire Services can access the course through completion of a QQI L6 special purpose award supplemented by 5 years relevant Fire Service prior experience.

Total Fees EU: €3000

Students completing the course over 18 months (1 academic year plus one semester) instead of over a calendar year (four 10 week sessions), may be eligible for SUSI funding. Applicants may also apply to Skillnet for funding.

There is a national and worldwide shortage of suitably qualiﬁed ﬁre safety engineers and technologists. Graduates will be able to seek employment in ﬁre engineering consultancies, architecture practices, the ﬁre service, local authorities, fire & evacuation consultancies, regulatory authorities and the insurance industry.
