Course Overview
This programme is ideal for students interested in sport, recreation, outdoor pursuits, or coaching and instruction. It offers students the opportunity to acquire appropriate practical expertise, enables them to develop the competencies to be influential leaders in the sports industry and provides several pathways through postgraduate study.
Students also learn about all aspects of business, leadership, marketing, and digital technology modules, which equip them with entrepreneurial skills and allow them to work in the business and sports industries.
As part of the practical element of this degree, students regularly work with children and other target populations, including schools and different environments, in health and fitness, sports education, coaching, and swim teaching. Graduates of this degree have gone on to specialise in secondary school teaching, as fitness professionals and business startups and study Masters in Health Promotion, Marketing and Sports Management.
In Year 3, students go on a work placement. In the past, students have gone to various settings, including schools, sports teams, gyms and multiple businesses. Work placement allows students to put all they learn in college into real work experience.
Year 1
Students begin by studying sports modules, including Aquatics, Adventure Tourism, Fundamental Movement Skills, Athletics, Gymnastics and Dance, and business modules in Accounting and Business Technology.
Year 2
Students study Marketing, Economics, Information Technology, Sports Management and Sports Law. They can acquire European accreditation in fitness instruction and study specialised areas such as Physical Activity for Healthy Ageing, Disability Sports or Pool Lifeguard. Students can exit after two years with a Higher Certificate in Applied Sport with Business.
Year 3
In the final year, students combine both business and sports modules by studying Enterprise, Managing People, Digital Analysis, Financial Management, Sports Planning, and elective choices in Surfing, Level 2 Swim Teaching or Sports Nutrition. A 13-week work placement is included as a critical component of the programme in Year 3.

We have incorporated several critical skills in the degree to equip students for a career in the sports and recreation industry.
Students gain practical experience in teaching, skills development, team and personal coaching across various indoor and outdoor leisure and sporting activities.
Students develop competencies in core business areas including management, marketing, finance, law and computer applications.
Students develop people-related skills, including communication, interpersonal, teamwork and customer service skills.
Students understand and learn how to apply conceptual and organisational skills, including collecting and organising information, problem-solving, planning and organising.
Students learn gym instruction.
Students gain valuable experience in surfing and swimming.

Fundamentals of AquaticsThis subject aims to introduce students to the aquatic environment as part of the leisure industry. It will provide students with the necessary skills to carry out front crawl, back crawl, breast stroke and butterfly to a basic level. Various fundamental movement skills will be practised in an aquatic environment. Play with purpose activities will be explored. Student's attendance and initial swimming ability will have an effect on their achievement of the learning outcomes. All ability groups are catered for from non swimmer to advanced. Learning Outcomes 1. Describe where aquatics fits in the leisure industry, explainpools rules, safety and pool hygiene procedures. 2. Play, Dance and Fundamental Movement SkillsThe module aims to increase the students understanding of the theory and practice of skills development. Students will gain an understanding of the place skills development plays in improving levels of motor ability. The place that skills development plays in long term motor development is also explored. Students will get hands on experience in practice and assessment techniques and will examine the development of appropriate fundamental skills applicable to motor development. Practical experience is a large focus of the module.Students will have the opportunity to deliver skills orientated classes, using games, dance and movement. Learning to deliver goal focused lessons which reflect school based physical education scenarios is a key component of the module. Learning Outcomes 1. Research Based Study SkillsThis module is for students making the transition to 3rd level study in the areas of Sport and Business. The module uses a variety of teaching techniques to build confidence and competence in time management, the use of source materials, research methods, essay writing, note-taking, reflection and presentation skills. Sociology of SportThis module aims to introduce the student to the historical evolution of sport recreation and leisure and its link with society. It aims to discuss key sociological terms as they apply to sport in society. It will examine sociological issues in modern sport and society. Learning Outcomes 1. Athletics and GymnasticsThe student as coach is the main theme of the athletics element of this module. This module aims to qualify the student with the skills and competencies required to coach athletics (or another preselected sport) at novice and developmental level. The subject will be taught in conjunction with the relevant NGB qualifications and within the context of the National Coaching Development Plan. The student will also learn gymnastics skills and appreciate the aesthetics of movement. Exploratory gymnastics (also called educational gymnastics) is an approach that will allow the student to explore the different elements of gymnastics movements; including body awareness, basic body positions, balance, support, locomotor skills, and circular movements. Learning Outcomes 1. Describe and analyse skills development and motor learning theory. 2. Demonstrate good communication and individual management strategies to improve participation and learning. 3. This module will review the psychology in health behaviours. Students will review the areas of focus in HP throughout the lifespan. The use of forms of media in Health promotion will be illustrated. Sport and Adventure TourismThis module examines the various classifications and categorisations of sports and adventure tourism. It reflects upon the myriad forms and impacts of sports tourism and the professional actions required within the field. Anatomy and PhysiologyThis module examines the fundamentals of anatomy and physiology in the context of exercise. The module is pitched at an introductory level and is designed to support students coming from a non-science/biology background. The content will also support many other physical activity based modules delivered later in the programme. Aquatics: Lifesaving and Swim Teaching skillsThis elective module aims to provide progression from Fundamentals of Aquatics module to provide training in the area of lifesaving and swim teaching. Students have the opportunity to gain two industry recognised qualifications. Students will cover basic lifesaving training: It will include demonstration of effective rescue strokes, land and water based rescues, CPR (Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation) & first aid. Theory inc: the principles of accident prevention, casualty identification, principles of rescue, spinal cord injury management (SCIM), CPR and first aid. Students who meet the external body attendance requirements and standards will receive the Royal Lifesaving Society Emergency Response Swimming Pool Certification. Students will train as Assistant Swimming Teachers working with primary school children of various swim abilities to teach swimming stokes and skills. Students who meet the external body attendance and standard requirements will be eligible for assessment and certification for the Water Safety Ireland Level 1 Assistant Swim Teacher award. Health and FitnessThis module lays the foundation for REPS Ireland accreditation in Fitness Instruction. Students will learn the fundamentals of different approaches to warm-up, stretching and cool down and be able to apply the principles of training for the development of flexibility and cardiovascular fitness. Health screening and health /fitness assessment will also be addressed with the use of standardised questionnaires, health indexes, body composition assessment, flexibility and cardiovascular fitness testing. Pool Lifeguard SkillsThis module prepares students to work as a pool lifeguard in various types of swimming pools. Students who meet the external body attendance requirements and standards will receive the Royal Lifesaving Society (RLSS) National Pool Lifeguard Qualification (NPLQ) certification. A good standard of swim fitness is necessary. Students must be able to: Jump/dive into deep water, swim 50 metres in less than 60 seconds, Swim 100 metres continuously on front and back in deep water, Swim 40m proficient inverted breaststroke, Swim 40m proficient sidestroke, Tread water for 30 seconds, Surface dive to the floor of the pool, Climb out unaided without ladder/steps and where the pool design permits. Learning Outcomes 1. Describe the role and responsibilities of the lifeguard and identifythe policies and procedures associated with working in a swimming pool facility. 2. Disability Sport InclusionThis module aims to give candidates the basic knowledge and practical skills to allow them to engage people with disabilities in a physical activity setting. Theory based knowledge will identify models of inclusion and issues around coaching individuals with disabilities. Medical complications associated with populations with low levels of physical activity will be explored. Practical workshops will facilitate exploration of the specific needs of a target population and ways of adapting physical activity sessions to make them more inclusive. In this regard, the learner will gain experience working face to face with people with disabilities. Candidates will also be encouraged to complete 'Disability Inclusion Training' during the semester. Blended teaching and learning technologies will be employed in the delivery and assessment of this module. Learning Outcomes 1. Introduction to EconomicsThis module introduces the learner to Micro and Macro Economics and aims to instil an understanding and appreciation of how the economy operates. The module will provide the learner with the skills and vocabulary necessary to analyse and research the economics issues which arise in an ever changing economic environment. Business LawThe objective of this module is to give the student a broad overview of the structure of the Irish legal system and how it operates. An introduction will also be given to the European legal system. The student will be provided with an understanding of the basic principles of contract law and tort law which are essential in the commercial and sporting environment. It is intended that this module will create an awareness of where legal expertise may need to be sought. Learning Outcomes 1. Describe the system of administration of justice in Ireland in relation to civil and criminal law, identifying the sources of law and their relative positions of authority within that system; 2. Gym InstructionThis module aims to provide students with the necessary skills and knowledge to operate effectively as an EQF Level 3 Fitness Instructor within the health and fitness industry. It is an important milestone in becoming an accredited fitness instructor. Students will role play as weights instructors and learn the basics of resistance programme design. The leaner will complete an e-portfolio of work and be tested with regard to theoretical knowledge at the end of the module. Blended teaching and learning technologies will be used in the delivery of this module. Nutrition and PerformanceHuman nutrition as the base for human health and performance will be explored during this module. The dynamics of carbohydrate, lipid and protein metabolism will be reviewed. The role of vitamins, minerals and water in the context of human performance will be illustrated as well as optimal nutrition for exercise and human energy expenditure. Use of sports supplements will be explored against the backdrop of the World Anti Doping Agency Guidelines. Various nutritional strategies employed by sports athletes to gain a competitive edge will be discussed. In addition, the prevalence of disordered eating in the general and sporting population will be investigated. Blended learning technologies will be employed in the delivery and assessment of this module. Important: Candidates wishing to pursue the embedded EQF Level 4 Personal Training Qualification upstream, must complete this elective module. Learning Outcomes 1. SurfingParticular reference is paid to the Northwest of Ireland and its world class natural surfing resource. The culture of surfing and related lifestyle sports are examined. The module will provide an exploration into the physiological and psychological benefits that result from human interaction with the ocean and the natural environment. Students will develop an increased understanding of the ocean and complex dynamics that underlie the sport of surfing. The module has a practical water based component through which the fundamental skills involved in surfing are developed. Learning Outcomes 1. Aquatics: Level 2 Swim Teacher PracticeThis module aims to provide students with a detailed theoretical and practical knowledge of teaching swimming. Eligible students will gain industry recognised qualification – Water Safety Ireland Level 2 Swim Teacher Certificate. Prerequisite for certification: Students must hold an Assistant Swim Teacher certificate and have taught 15 sessions since their assistant swim teacher training. Learning Outcomes 1. Examine the fundamental principles of aquatics and report on anatomy and physiology as applied to aquatic activity. 2. Analyse the technical aspects of Freestyle, Backstroke, Breaststroke, Butterfly, Lifesaving backstroke and lifesaving sidestroke under the BLABT format. 3. Differentiatethe stages ofgrowth and development; its effect on swimmers and appropriate training focus/methods for each stage. 4. Review the acquisition of a skill, provide feedback to swimmers and base teaching practices on the ability of the swimmer 5. Show plans, schemes of work and deliver teaching classes for all age and ability groups using a variety of teaching methods. |

Working in a service business means that an understanding of the characteristics of such organisations and their marketing challenges must be appreciated by the student. Teaching and Coaching (Team Sports)This subject aims to qualify the student with the skills and competencies required to coach e.g. GAA, rugby and basketball at underage or developmental level. The subject will be taught in conjunction the iCoach Kids study Guide and the relevant national governing body qualifications and within the context of the National Coaching Development Plan. Learning Outcomes 1. Demonstrate a knowledge, understanding and practical ability to coach/teach in the sports of GAA, football, rugby and basketball to young children 2. Demonstrate a knowledge of the skills and attributes required for coaching young children in team sports 3. Erasmus Semester Abroad (MKTS)This module is available for 30 ECTS credits of a semester abroad of learning where the student is required to attend modules of academic study in a relevant host/partner College/University/Institute. A learning agreement is used to identify a variety of modules and group of educational components offered by the Erasmus partner, preferably in cognate fields to match their existing programme. All teaching and assessment will be carried out in and by the host College/University/Institute. Learning Outcomes 1. Have developed intellectual flexibility through approaching their academic discipline from another perspective. 2. Have an increased awareness of, and sensitivity to other cultural customs, normsandpracticesin the host country/institute. 3. Use the experience of differenteducation culture and exposure to new teaching and learning methods to prepare them better for employment or further studyand be able to outline the benefits of same. 4. Progression
Graduates may progress to Year 4 of AU903 BBus (Hons) in Sport with Business and complete one more year to graduate with an honours degree.
Alternatively, Level 7 graduates can progress to the one-year add-on BBus (Hons) in Business.
Graduates who complete this Level 7 degree and Year 4 of our Level 8 honours degree in Sport with Business may apply to complete a Professional Master of Education (PME) to become a secondary school teacher of Physical Education.
Other areas of further study open to graduates include health promotion, marketing, management, sports psychology, and strength and conditioning.

Many start their own business, work as fitness professionals, and work in sports facility management, sports development and management, health promotion, personal training, coaching and instruction. This programme is a great platform that provides routes to areas such as PE, running your own business, and personal training.
Prior graduates have gone on to specialise in teaching, as a fitness professional, business startups and study at Masters level in Health Promotion, Marketing and Sports Management, amongst other avenues.
