The ATU Traveller and Roma Communities Bursary provides financial support to students from the Traveller and Roma communities who are planning to study in ATU.
Overview
The ATU Traveller and Roma Communities Bursary provides financial support to students from the Traveller and Roma communities who are planning to study in ATU. The aim is to help reduce financial barriers and support equality, diversity and inclusion in higher education.
The Bursary is awarded for the full duration of the programme, subject to satisfactory academic progress each year.
Successful applicants will receive:
- An annual bursary to assist with study costs (A maximum of up to €3,000 will be awarded per bursary, dependent on programme duration, credits undertaken)
- Access to academic supports, including mentoring
- Ongoing support from the University’s Access and Widening Participation team.
Eligibility to apply:
To be eligible, applicants must:
- Be a member of the Irish Traveller or Roma community
- Be resident in Ireland.
- Have applied for a programme in ATU.
- Be able to show that you would benefit from financial support

How to Apply
Apply for your chosen ATU course through one of the following means:
- Full-time undergraduate via the CAO (Central Applications Office)
- All other courses directly to ATU via the “Apply Now” link on the relevant course page https://www.atu.ie/courses

After you submit your form:
Applications will be reviewed as part of a competitive selection process.
Please note that bursary funding is limited and submission of an application does not guarantee an award.
Applications will be assessed against the bursary criteria and a shortlist of applicants will be invited to attend a meeting with the bursary review team between 26th–28th August 2026.
During the meeting applications will be considered based on:
- Eligibility criteria
- Preparation for study/registration on programme/course
- Financial need
- Personal statement and supporting information.
You will also be asked to bring the following documents to the meeting;
- Evidence of application to ATU for next academic year
- Evidence of financial need (e.g. in receipt of a means-tested payment such as SUSI, social welfare payment such as Back to Education Allowance or equivalent).
- This bursary is specifically for Traveller and Roma students. You will be asked to confirm your cultural identity by means of a school/community reference letter. This information is used only to confirm eligibility and is kept strictly confidential.
- Further details may be requested following application to confirm information in your application form.
