Civil Engineering

Where are you from (town and school)?
I am from Tourlestrane Co Sligo and I attended St Attracta’s Community School.
Tell us a little bit about yourself and what led you to choosing your course
I am a creative person with a keen interest for maths. I really enjoyed construction in secondary school which helped me choose to study civil engineering. I was also influenced by my two older brothers who both studied engineering at university.
Tell us why you chose ATU
I chose ATU as I live in Sligo, and it is a great university to have right on my doorstep. I attended the open day whilst in Leaving Certificate which opened my eyes to just how impressive the ATU campus really is. Getting to speak to lecturers helped me to know it was the right decision for me.
What do you like about life in your campus location (people, food, accommodation, scenery etc.)?
My favourite part about living and studying in Sligo is the scenery. With places like Rosses Point, Strandhill, knocknarea and Ben Bulben just a few miles away, you are never lost for something to do.
What advice would you give to a student thinking about coming to ATU?
Attend the open days and talk to lecturers, it is the best way to truly know what to expect from your course. The lecturers are very helpful and are happy to answer any questions.
What do/did you enjoy most about your course?
The thing I enjoy most about my course is the hands-on learning approach. There are so many group projects that allow you to experience practical work, away from the lecture halls.
I also enjoyed getting to experience all of the different engineering disciplines throughout first year.
If you were speaking with a first-year student about to start your course, what advice/information would you give them?
Attend lectures! With such small numbers in each lecture they are the perfect opportunity to ask questions, and get help from the lecturers.
If you are/were involved in sport, volunteering, working or have other passions you pursue outside of your academic life, can you tell us about that (especially mention any teams, clubs or awards)?
I play Gaelic Football for both ATU Sligo and Sligo Ladies. I have played football since 8 years of age and it is something I have really grown to enjoy. I am currently on scholarship for ATU which has really helped me to balance the university and sporting life.
What are your plans after graduating?
After graduating university, I would love to take some time to travel and see different parts of the world before settling down and starting my career.
