Junior Maths Enrichment Programme – Letterkenny
ATU Donegal is offering an extra-curricular Mathematics Enrichment Programme for 1st, 2nd and 3rd year secondary school students commencing on Tuesday January 27, 2026.
Classes will take place on Tuesday evenings from 7pm to 8:30pm in room 2271 at ATU in Letterkenny.
The programme is likely to be of interest to students who have a strong interest in mathematics, who enjoy mathematical challenges and who are keen to expand their knowledge of the subject beyond the post-primary curriculum.
Our goal is to introduce students to the excitement and buzz of mathematical discovery – of finding a new method or idea to solve a problem that had previously seemed impossible.
The course is open to any interested student (living north or south of the border) and is free of charge.
Registration
Please register using this link. You will be asked to provide the following information:

Venue and Dates
ATU Letterkenny classes take place in room 2271 in the main building (go in the main entrance – go up one flight of stairs, turn left and go up the steps through the door to the corridor and the classroom will be half-way down on your left-hand side).
We’ll also meet students at reception on the first day of Enrichment Classes.
Each session begins at 7:00pm and finishes at 8:30pm. There will be breaks during the session.
Classes will run most Tuesdays from January 27 to April 21 inclusive. There will be no class on February 18 (midterm break for some schools), March 17, and on April 1 & 8 (Easter break).
What is the Junior Mathematics Enrichment course?
The Mathematics Enrichment course is designed to develop a sound understanding of mathematics and improve problem-solving skills. There is little overlap with the mathematics taught in school.
While there will be some mathematical theory included, the emphasis will be on solving problems rather than accumulating theory.
Participants will be trained to create original deductive arguments to establish mathematical facts.
The problems studied require inventive thinking rather than applying known techniques.
The course is delivered by ATU mathematics lecturers and postgraduate students.
Who is this course for?
These classes are for talented students of mathematics in 1st, 2nd and 3rd year in secondary school (and for similar Northern Ireland students).
You cannot become a problem solver without solving problems on your own! Therefore, from each participant, the willingness to do some homework is expected. But most of the “work” will be in class and often based on puzzles.
Students in Transition Year, 5th year and 6th year (and equivalent students in Northern Ireland) are welcome to attend the Senior Mathematics Enrichment classes due to recommence in October 2026 – further information will be available on the ATU website closer to the time.
How much does it cost?
These classes are provided free of charge. They are supported by the Irish Mathematical Trust and its sponsors
