ATU to welcome hundreds of second level pupils to city campus open day (Sat 25 March 10am-1pm)
Atlantic Technological University (ATU) is preparing to welcome hundreds of secondary school pupils, teachers, parents and mature students to its Galway city campuses at Dublin Road and Wellpark Road for its Open Day on Saturday next, 25 March. Running from 10am to 1pm, the event will showcase the range of undergraduate programmes on offer across the university campuses in the west and north-west.
Information will be provided on all courses in the areas of Agriculture, Built Environment, Business, Computing, Creative Arts & Media, Culinary Arts, Hospitality and Event PR, Engineering, Furniture Design, Making & Technology, Heritage, Tourism, Nursing, Health Sciences & Social Care, Psychology, Outdoor Education, Science, Sports Coaching and Teacher Education. A free shuttle bus service will be available for guests to visit both campuses throughout the open day.
In the Dublin Road campus, there will be talks on the CAO Application Process, Access Office, Introductory from the various Schools and campuses, and student finance and supports.
In Wellpark Road (Cluain Mhuire campus) there will be demonstrations, exhibitions, tours and talks in the areas of Art, Graphic Design, Interior Design, Fashion and Textile, Film and Documentary, Animation and Game Design, Education and Creative Media and Storytelling.
Also at Dublin Road, the Galway International Hotel School (GIHS) will host an “Immersive Culinary Experience” and the culinary team will be on hand to outline courses in Gastronomy, Food and Culinary Arts.
Other events include poster presentations, videos of student work and updates on career opportunities available to graduates.
A special guest talk “Learn how to study in an efficient and effective manner” will be delivered by Dr Seán Lally, The Study Coach, at 11am in Theatre 995. It will focus on the science of effective and efficient study, helping students maximise their time ahead of the exams.
Lorraine Cunningham, ATU Galway-Mayo Schools Liaison Officer, says: “This event provides great opportunities to learn about our 100+ CAO courses, the change of mind process, study tips, financial supports and university life, and our student ambassadors will give tours of the campus and facilities.”
The Dublin Road campus will showcase a mobile classroom called “The Aquaculture Remote Classroom (ARC), developed by Bord Iascaigh Mhara (BIM), Ireland’s Seafood Development Agency. The ARC is part of a European wide campaign designed to raise young people’s awareness of aquaculture.
Máirtín Walsh, Processing Development Executive, Bord Bord Iascaigh Mhara (BIM), says: “ARC is part of a European wide campaign called #FarmedintheEU which has been rolled out in ten other EU countries - Ireland is the only country to have developed the mobile classroom. The aim of the campaign #FarmedintheEU is to highlight the benefits of aquaculture in supplying sustainable seafood for the growing population, creating employment and helping sustain coastal communities in Ireland and all over the world.”
Dr Ian O’Connor, Head of Dept if Natural Resources & the Environment, ATU Galway City, says: “We’ve been teaching freshwater and marine biology at ATU Galway for 50 years and incoming first years join a community of almost 300 staff and students studying and researching freshwater and marine biology in our city campus. Our students benefit from the applied nature of our degrees featuring extensive practical and fieldwork, as well as a work placement.
“Many of our graduates go on to work in a range of roles in marine and freshwater ecology. Others complete postgraduate degrees such as our M.Sc. in Conservation Behaviour, or M.Sc. in Applied Marine Conservation. Some will also complete PhDs in the Marine and Freshwater Research Centre at the ATU Galway City campus, joining a community of over 30 PhD students working with 38 academic and research staff.”
