ATU launches free ‘Introduction to BIM’ MOOC for the built environment

Paul Walsh, Karol Dempsey, Dr Ellen McCabe, Dr David Collery, Minister Seán Canney, Dara Burke, Stacey O’Sullivan, Mark Costello, Dr Trevor McSharry, Dr Seán Duigan, and Prof Jacqueline McCormack launch the Introduction to BIM MOOC at ATU.

This fully online, self‑paced course is now available free of charge to learners worldwide, expanding access to high‑quality digital built‑environment education.

Building Information Modelling (BIM) is a smart digital process that creates and manages a 3D model and all related information for a building or infrastructure project. It allows architects, engineers, and construction professionals work together on one shared platform to improve coordination and reduce errors. As the sector continues its shift toward collaborative, data‑driven workflows, this new MOOC provides a clear and accessible foundation in BIM concepts, processes, and benefits.

Dr Trevor McSharry, Head of the School of the Built Environment, said:

This project funded by Murphy Geospatial through Data2Sustain required a collaborative effort across all of our academic departments as well as our instructional designers. Our goal is to democratise access to essential digital skills for the built environment. By offering this BIM MOOC for free, we hope to empower students, professionals, and organisations nationally and internationally, to embrace BIM and contribute to a more efficient, collaborative, and sustainable industry.

This is ATU’s second free MOOC from the Faculty of Engineering and Computing’s School of Built Environment, following the successful Introduction to Lean Construction course. The new BIM offering further strengthens ATU’s commitment to widening access to digital skills and supporting industry transformation.

What the course has to offer

The course was developed by ATU with valuable input and support from Murphy Geospatial, Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII), FutureCast, RPS, and other sectoral partners.
