International Swift Conference: A Biennial Meeting that focuses on Birds of the Swift Family.
The 8th International Swift Conference is being hosted by Swift Conservation Ireland/Mayo at the ATU (Atlantic Technological University) Mayo Campus.
8th International Swift Conference
It is the continuation of the series of International Swift Conferences that started in 2010. They are biennial meetings and previous venues have been:
2010 and 2012 in Berlin, Germany
2014 Cambridge, England
2016 Szczecin, Poland
2018 Tel Aviv, Israel
2022 Segovia, Spain
2024 Trieste, Italy
The Conference brings together Swift enthusiasts from around the world including conservationists, researchers, ornithologists, citizen scientists and many more.
The conference is being held on the ATU Mayo Campus, https://www.atu.ie/campus/mayo which is a short walk from the centre of Castlebar town.
The Conference format will follow that of previous years with contributions centred on Swifts and related subjects.
Keynote Address on the opening day – 27 May
An inspiring keynote address will be delivered by naturalist Eoin Warner who is a wildlife documentary presenter who has delivered some of Ireland’s foremost nature documentaries in recent years. In 2017 he was awarded two national media prizes for his work on “Éire Fhiálin” and recently completed the internationally broadcast “Ireland’s Wild Islands”.

Registration for the conference is through the website www.swiftsmayo2026.ie
Presentations
This Conference is a celebration of Swifts and this means that the call for presentations is very broad. Proposals for presentations are invited and can include but are not limited to:
- Scientific papers
- Non-scientific papers
- Short presentations relating to Poster submission
- Short presentations relating to art work or photography
- Video presentations
- Literature or poetry
Participants who would like to make a presentation are invited to submit abstracts of up to 400 words. We welcome contributions on conservation, biology, rehabilitation, migration, citizen science, activity reports of associations and any other topics dealing with Swifts.
The delivery time for presentations can be either long (15 minutes) or short (5 minutes). Please visit the conference website www.swiftsmayo2026.ie for specifics on how to submit an abstract. Deadline for submission of abstract is 1 December 2025.
The International Programme Committee will select those for oral presentation and for poster presentation.
Following the tradition of past conferences, the location of the next conference will be selected in the last session of the last day, after voting by the people present. Anyone interested in hosting the 2028 Conference should email swiftconservationireland@gmail.com
