Course Overview
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming the way organisations work, from improving efficiency and decision-making to supporting new business models. However, many professionals, especially in SMEs, need a clearer understanding of what AI can do, where it adds value, and how to use it responsibly.
This 60-credit Diploma in Applied AI is designed to bridge that gap. It equips office workers, supervisors, and junior managers with the practical knowledge and confidence to engage with AI tools in the workplace, without requiring a technical background.
The programme focuses on AI literacy, critical evaluation, and applied use cases. Graduates will be able to identify opportunities and risks, assess the value of AI in business, and apply AI responsibly in line with emerging EU and Irish governance frameworks.

Data Principles for AIThis module provides learners with a foundational understanding of how data underpins modern AI systems. Learners explore key concepts such as data types, data sources, data quality, and governance. The module develops the ability to evaluate whether organisational data is suitable for AI applications and to understand the implications of data quality, compliance, and privacy requirements. Emphasis is placed on practical workplace relevance and effective communication with technical teams. Learning Outcomes 1. Explain core data concepts and describe the role of data in AI systems. |

Generative AI & Prompt EngineeringThis module provides learners with a practical, structured understanding of generative AI and the principles of prompt engineering. It introduces text‑based, image‑based, and workflow‑oriented generative AI systems and focusses on how these tools can be safely and effectively applied within workplace contexts. Learners develop the ability to design clear, repeatable prompts, evaluate AI‑generated content, and integrate generative AI into real work processes. The module emphasises reliability, safe use, human oversight, and aligned organisational practice. Learning Outcomes 1. Applied AI Tools & WorkflowsThis module builds on the Generative AI & Prompt Engineering module, providing learners with practical, hands‑on experience using modern AI tools to enhance workplace productivity, communication, and decision‑making. It focuses on text‑based assistants, workplace automation tools, generative AI applications, and workflow‑based problem solving. The module emphasises safe, responsible, and context‑appropriate use of AI tools within professional settings. No programming or technical background is required. Learning Outcomes 1. Utilise a range of AI tools to support workplace tasks such as writing, summarisation, organisation, analysis, and communication. |

Responsible AI & GovernanceThis module introduces the principles, frameworks, and regulatory considerations that underpin the responsible and compliant use of AI in modern workplaces. Learners explore ethical considerations, fairness and bias, organisational governance practices, and emerging regulatory structures including the EU AI Act and data protection legislation. The module focusses on building the knowledge and judgement required to deploy and supervise AI tools safely, with appropriate human oversight and accountability. Learning Outcomes 1. Applied AI ProjectIn this module, learners will complete a capstone project in which they identify and evaluate an AI use case or improvement opportunity within their own workplace or a selected SME. Entry Requirements
Candidates must hold a Level 6 Higher National Certificate (120 Credits) in any discipline or equivalent. A technical qualification is not required.
Candidates who do not have a level 6 National Certificate at the required award level or equivalent qualifications but who have significant relevant experience may also be eligible for consideration via Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).
English Language Requirements:
English Language Requirements will be as determined by ATU and as published in the Access, Transfer and Progression code. The current requirements are as follows:
Non-EU applicants who are not English speakers must have a minimum score of 5.5 (with a minimum of 5.0 in each component) in the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) or equivalent. All results must have been achieved within 2 years of application to ATU.
EU applicants who are not English speakers are recommended to have a minimum score of 5.5 (with a minimum of 5.0 in each component) in the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) or equivalent.
