The MedTech sector consumes & generates significant amounts of resources and waste, for example, from the commonly used single-use devices. Sustainable alternatives exists but are barely used due to:
- Strict regulations and certification processes in the sector. A change to sustainable practices is a time- and cost-intensive investment for companies
- Clients/end-users prioritise cheap over sustainable
North-West Europe (NWE) is known for its strong MedTech ecosystem and a sustainable mindset in the society. Upcoming EU directives will put (non-) sustainable practices into the spotlight, thus providing another incentive to rethink production processes. Thus, the NWE MedTech stakeholders provide perfect conditions on the supply and demand side to be at the forefront of a sustainable transition of the sector, making it future-proof in terms of both, innovativeness and eco-friendliness.
The MEDI4Future project, funded by Interreg NEW, supports the transition towards a more resource-efficient and circular MedTech sector through:
- Developing a joint transnational strategy and action plan for NWE regions
- Raising stakeholder awareness to promote early ecodesign adoption
- Creating sector-specific implementation guidelines and a practical SME toolbox
- Testing circular solutions for single-use devices by pilot actions with MedTech SMEs
- Building capacity through cross regional training and collaboration
