Course Overview
Our Bachelor of Engineering in Civil Engineering provides you with a broad based technician level training qualification in the field of Civil Engineering. It’s a gateway to a career in the construction industry, one of the most exciting and diverse sectors to work in.
This three-year programme is concerned with most of the infrastructure that contributes to modern civilization. After all, Civil Engineers are involved in the planning, design and construction of the facilities we all use every single day in relation to living, industry and transport.
Graduates can go on to consider a number of potential careers, not only as Civil Engineers, but as Land Surveyors and Site Engineers. The sectors you can find yourself working in are equally diverse – including Structural Engineering, Environmental Engineering and Local and Central Government.
Progression
Many graduates of this Level 7 programme progress to Level 8 and Level 9 Civil Engineering programmes at other ATU campuses or universities at home and abroad. Progression honours degrees include a range of civil engineering and construction management options including BSc Hons in Construction Management at ATU Donegal (Year 4).

Testimonial
At the early stages of Secondary School, I developed a keen interest in the construction industry, which encouraged me to complete a BTEC National Certificate in Construction and the Built Environment. It was after these studies, I worked as a Trainee Quantity Surveyor with a London based firm RPR Fitout Limited. Throughout the years working with the company, I really enjoyed this role however, I wanted a more problem-solving profession.
Regular interaction with employees and subcontractors opened the door to experience a Civil Engineers role and the daily tasks associated. Equipped with the knowledge and experience of working within the construction industry I chose to leave my full-time job to gain a BEng in Civil Engineering. I decided to study at ATU Donegal as it is an accredited course by the Engineers Ireland, this was a huge incentive as it would help me continue towards my goal of becoming a Chartered Engineer.
The course modules were another aspect of this course which made me decide to attend the course as they offer a more combined learning experience both practical and theoretical, which I discovered was an easier way to grasp engineering. One of my favourite aspects of this course was environmental engineering. Itâs a sector that will always prove to be challenging when trying to balance environmental, social, and economic needs of the entire community.
