Incoming Students

The Erasmus+ programme is a European Union funding exchange programme. Students from a European partner university are eligible to study at ATU for a semester or an academic year.

Nomination and Application

To apply to study at Atlantic Technological University (ATU) for Erasmus+, you must be nominated by your home university or college via our mobility online platform. Please contact your home international office for the nomination process.

You must also ensure there is an agreement in place between ATU and your home university in the campus and subject area. A full list of our agreements can be found here

Once nominated on the mobility online platform you will need to you submit several other documents.

Your application will not be processed until all documents have been received so please ensure you send all items before the application deadline.

If successful, you will then receive an offer. Once you have received your offer you must then begin booking accommodation and making travel plans. We remind all students that ATU do not own or manage any accommodation, so we recommend securing accommodation as soon as possible. Our teams are available to advise you.

Learning Agreement

Erasmus+ students must complete a learning agreement. ATU accepts all learning agreements via EWP or third-party software and PDF where partners are not using the EWP dashboard. Please discuss your course choices with your home academic coordinator.

Your university must have an Erasmus+ agreement with your specific campus choice and subject area to study at ATU under the Erasmus+ programme. If you are unsure if your university has an Erasmus+ agreement with ATU, then please speak with the institutional or academic coordinator at your home university.

English Proficiency

Lectures at ATU are conducted through the medium of English. A good knowledge of English is therefore essential. ATU requires students to provide English language certificates to show that they have reached a CEFR level B2.

What will it cost?

Students who study at ATU under the Erasmus+ programme are not required to pay tuition or registration fees to ATU.

Erasmus funding is provided by your home university. Please contact your home Erasmus+ Coordinator for more information on Erasmus+ funding.

Outgoing Students

Erasmus+ is the European Union’s programme to support education and training in Europe. It supports students to embark on transformative study and work experiences abroad.

Students can choose to immerse themselves in an international academic setting for 3-12 months or engage in a traineeship (work placement) for 2-12 months in a participating country. The process of going on an Erasmus+ must be started almost a year before you wish to start studying abroad.

We also have opportunities with partner colleges and universities outside the EU, such as the USA, Canada, Brazil and many more.

Most ATU students study abroad through English. However, some students undertaking a foreign language module may have the option to study through this language.

What do I need to take part in the Erasmus+ programme?

Insurance
All students participating in the Erasmus+ programme are advised to have comprehensive health and travel insurance policies.

European Health Insurance Card

Students will need the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) which is obtainable from the relevant local health board. The EHIC entitles holders to full medical treatment in any European Union country, for any condition, whether it is of an emergency nature.

Full information on the EHIC is available on the European Health Insurance Card website: www.ehic.ie

Private Health Insurance

It is recommended that you take out some form of private health insurance policy to cover you while you are studying abroad. You should not rely on the cover provided by the EHIC as this may be quite limited. Public healthcare systems vary from country to country, and few countries pay the full cost of healthcare for holders of the EHIC.

Am I eligible to go on Work Placement through the Erasmus+ programme?

Students can utilise Erasmus+ funding to take a work placement as a credit bearing part of their programme, throughout the summer months or after graduation. Students can carry out a traineeship in an enterprise, a research institute, a laboratory, an organisation or any other relevant workplace abroad. By taking part in a traineeship abroad, you can greatly improve the knowledge, skills and competencies that employers are looking for.

If your work placement meets the following criteria, you may be eligible for Erasmus+ funding:

Final assessment will be carried out by the ATU Erasmus+ Coordinators to confirm with certainty.

How do I apply to go on Work Placement through the Erasmus+ programme?

The first step in applying for your funding is sourcing your work placement. It is the student’s responsibility to source their own work placement. Use your connections such as lecturers, programme coordinators or other students. Here are some useful websites that advertise placement opportunities.

Once you find a suitable placement, you will need to ensure you have your programme coordinators approval.

You can then contact your campus specific Erasmus+ Coordinator to progress with funding application.

What will I need to go on Work Placement?

All students partaking in Erasmus+ must ensure they have a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) and insurance. For students on work placement, they must ensure that their insurance covers them within the workplace.

Full information on the EHIC is available on the European Health Insurance Card website: www.ehic.ie

It is recommended that you take out some form of private health insurance policy to cover you while you are abroad. You should not rely on the cover provided by the EHIC as this may be quite limited.

Public healthcare systems vary from country to country, and few countries pay the full cost of healthcare for holders of the EHIC.

For non-EU students who are not eligible to receive an EHIC, you must ensure that your private insurance covers you for studying or working in your chosen destination.
