Ashleigh White
Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Communications with English

Tell us a little bit about yourself and what led you to choosing your course?
I’m 20 years old and loved English in school. I was delighted when I realised that there was a course so close to home that I loved the sound of. I had heard so many great reports of the Letterkenny campus and their student life so it suited me perfectly. After doing some research I realised how broad communications is also and while I never had an interest in it before, I now know how important the skill is, and will benefit me in whatever area of work I decide to go into
What are your favourite modules on the course?
My favourite module in first year was definitely ‘The Novel’. I really enjoyed exploring literature and reading things I would not have read otherwise. While there is a lot of time spent reading, the class discussions in that class were very insightful and also brought us closer as a group. Content design and development in our first semester of second year was very interesting and I really enjoyed learning about the marketing world. My favourite module has definitely been creative writing, not only does that module really push you to try new things and expand your writing skills but we had an amazing lecturer who wanted to to see the whole class succeed. Doing this module also has inspired me to do my dissertation on this area, which I wouldn’t have known was possible without this module.
Is there anything else about the course that you particularly enjoy or find beneficial?
I enjoy that there really is a mix of areas the course explores. We have done modules in law, teaching English as a foreign language and sociology. The course really is so broad and it really helps when trying to decide the next step you want to take after college. I really enjoy the relationship between the lecturers and the class as they are so passionate about their areas which is so encouraging. Being in a smaller class group is also beneficial as there is more personal time with the lecturers and you can ask them about any questions or concerns you have.
What is the best thing about your course that you think new applicants should know?
I would say that college is so different to school. Being in a class with people who have all chosen to be there and picked the same course is so beneficial. I have made friends for life in college and have had so many opportunities within my course that I never would have had before. I think the best part about the course is the class discussions we have, and being around like minded people.
If you were speaking with a first year student about to start your course, what advice would you give them?
I would encourage them to get involved in class discussions, and any clubs or societies that they are interested in. I would also tell them to always ask for help when needed, as they will be met with such kindness and help. I would also tell them to also go out and enjoy the student nights in Letterkenny as many memories will be made there also. I would tell them to be prepared for the reading we have to do, but if you manage your time well and are interested in the course you will be okay.
What are your plans after ATU and any long-term goals you are aiming for?
I plan to further explore areas in writing. I am unsure yet what area but I am interested in journalism and also marketing.
