The programme, which is already successfully delivered at ATU’s Letterkenny and Sligo campuses, is designed to provide a supported pathway for adult learners and those who may not have previously had the opportunity to access higher education. Applications are now open for the Mayo delivery.

The Certificate in Access for Higher Education equips students with the academic skills, confidence and knowledge required to progress to undergraduate study. Participants engage in modules that develop core competencies in academic writing, study skills, digital literacy and personal development, while also exploring subject-specific areas aligned with their future study interests.

Speaking about the expansion, Rory McMorrow, Head of Access, Widening Participation and Sport at ATU, said:

“The expansion of the Certificate in Access for Higher Education to our Mayo campus marks a significant step in ensuring that higher education is accessible to all members of our community. This programme provides a supportive and inclusive environment where learners can build confidence, develop essential academic skills and realise their potential. We are proud to extend this opportunity to prospective students in Mayo and the wider region.”

The programme is particularly suited to adult learners, individuals returning to education, and those seeking an alternative route into higher education. On successful completion, graduates may progress to a wide range of undergraduate programmes within ATU, subject to entry requirements.

Dr. Deirdre Garvey, Head of Department of Environmental and Social Sciences at ATU, welcomed the development:

“The Certificate in Access for Higher Education reflects ATU’s strong commitment to lifelong learning and social inclusion. By delivering this programme in Mayo, we are removing barriers and creating meaningful pathways for learners who aspire to further study. It is an important addition to our Humanities and Access provision and to the educational landscape of the region.”

The launch of the programme in Mayo complements existing provision in Letterkenny and Sligo, ensuring broader regional access across ATU’s campuses.

Applications for the Certificate in Access for Higher Education at ATU are now open. Further information on eligibility criteria, module content and how to apply is available at:
