The Department of Pharmacy at ATU is future-focused, integrating clinical pharmacy practice with cutting-edge healthcare and pharmaceutical sciences research. Developing graduates with the expertise required for contemporary pharmacy roles and to take on the expanded responsibilities that pharmacists now have in patient care. Students have access to state-of-the-art teaching facilities in a newly purpose-built STEM building in Sligo, ensuring they are well-equipped to meet the evolving needs of the pharmacy profession in the Northwest region and beyond.

Meet our Head of Department

Marita is a pharmacist with a background in pharmacy and health policy and regulation. Marita worked in the Department of Health, as Chief Pharmacist, Director of the National Patient Safety Office, as well as in anti-microbial resistance, clinical effectiveness and health systems performance policy. Prior to that, Marita worked for PSI across a number of its functions. Marita has contributed as a member of national fora including the HIQA National Care Experience Programme Steering Group, NPHETs for CPE, COVID and H1N1, National Advisory Committee on Drugs & Alcohol and HPRA Advisory Committee for Human Medicines.

About the MPharm Course

The MPharm programme at Atlantic Technological University (ATU) is a five-year full-time Level 9 Master of Pharmacy programme based in the Sligo campus.  

This modern programme, is designed to engage students and prepare them for future careers in pharmacy. The ATU MPharm programme integrates evidence-based clinical pharmacy practice with cutting-edge healthcare and pharmaceutical sciences research. It will develop well-rounded pharmacists with the knowledge and skills for contemporary pharmacy practice and all the competencies necessary to become a registered pharmacist and practice in Ireland.

Graduates benefit from a solid foundational grounding necessary to quickly develop new skills and competencies to take on expanded pharmacist roles, as the pharmacy profession evolves to meet the needs of patients and the health service.

Over the five years, students have the opportunity to learn from pharmacists, clinicians and other leading experts, and undertake structured work placements across the spectrum of pharmacy and healthcare practice. These site visits and workplace experiences develop and deepen students’ understanding of pharmacy practice, health services, as well as the pharmaceutical, biopharmaceutical and MedTech industries.
