Master of Health Science in Professional Healthcare Studies programme is appropriate for students who have already undertaken a Postgraduate Diploma (health/social care/disability studies related) programme at level 9 or equivalent on the National Framework of Qualifications (NFQ). Students apply for accreditation of prior learning for 60 ECTs for their Postgraduate Diploma qualification and then proceed for a further 60 ECTs at level 9 toward the award of Master of Health Science award. This is a multidisciplinary programme with allied healthcare professions receiving the award of Professional Studies and nurses receiving the award of Nursing Studies.
This multidisciplinary programme offers students a flexible option to use credits (60 ECTS) already gained at postgraduate level 9, to return to study for a MHSc award. Applications are considered from students nationally and not just past student of ATU St Angelas. Students are offered a hybrid delivery while attending 3-4 days per semester. Students are offered both group and individual supervision for the research dissertation.
Programme Outline
This is a one calendar year part-time programme.
- Students are required to have already undertaken a level 9 research module.
- Students are required and to have a research proposal (4000 words) already prepared before commencing the programme.
- Students will attend seminar days (3-4) in semester one and two.
- Students will be allocated a supervisor and will partake in individual and group supervision to develop and undertake their research project.
A 10-credit module has a 20 hour per week workload and this includes class time, online directed work, self-directed work and assessment preparation.
Students will undertake student undertake a systematic evidence synthesis or a primary research study under supervision.
Students attend 3-4 online seminar days per semester.
Applicants will normally have gained:
A Postgraduate Diploma: for 60 ECTS at Level 9 in health/disability/social care related studies or evidence of equivalent academic credits achieved.
Applicants must have achieved an aggregate mark of 60% overall in the Postgraduate Diploma programme phase.
And
Have successfully completed a postgraduate level 9 research module (or equivalent learning)
And
Be a registered nurse/midwife on the Register maintained by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland;
Or
Be registered on another allied healthcare professional register* as appropriate;
And
Be currently employed in some aspect of health/disability or social care delivery e.g. care delivery, education, policy development, management, and associated support services.
International students will require a degree of fluency in the English language. An overall score of 6.5 in the
IELTS Academic Test is required.

On successful completion of this programme, students are well positioned for senior positions in health and social care management, practice or education.
This programme is suitable for nurses and other allied healthcare and social care professionals interested in advancing their understanding of research methods, knowledge generation for practice and evidence synthesis and translation. Students will develop knowledge and skills to avail of a variety of employment opportunities in the acute and community setting.
