Course Overview

With an increased emphasis on teaching computing in schools, there is increasing demand for teachers to introduce technology and coding as part of the curriculum. This 10 credit special purpose level-8 award is designed to assist teachers in developing their underpinning knowledge of computer systems are architecture; core areas of any computing curriculum.

The module will introduce network technologies and standards required to build data networks. Specifically the objectives of the course are to:

Describe the operations that make up the fundamental workings of the computer.
Recognise and describe the diverse components of the computer system by their basic function, internal implementation, inputs and outputs, and their relationship to each other.
Locate and detail the roles of the CPU and main memory in the context of the overall system and the execution of programs.
Explain the role of the main components of an Operating System.
Describe file, memory, process and input-output management techniques.
Explain the services and protocols required for networking and cloud systems.

1	Computer Systems To provide the learner with a general description of the key hardware components of a generic computer system and how these components interact to produce a functioning computer. To introduce network technologies and standards in order to build data networks. Learning Outcomes 1. Appraise the operations that make up the fundamental workings of the computer. 2. Distinguish and evaluate the diverse components of the computer system by their basic function, their internal implementation, their inputs and outputs, and their relationship to each other. 3. Establish and explain the roles of the CPU and the main memory in the context of the overall system and the execution of programs. 4. Appraise the role of the main components of an operating system. 5. Appraise file, memory, process and input-output management techniques. 6. Apply the networking services and protocols for networking and cloud systems.	10	Mandatory

Examination and Assessment

Note: Where assessment on the programme involves examinations, these are held on campus or at another exam venue in the Republic of Ireland. There are typically two exam periods: January and May. Times scheduled for examinations (face to face / online exams ) are in GMT.
