Course Overview

With an increased emphasis on teaching computing in schools, there is increasing demand for teachers to introduce technology and coding as part of the curriculum. The study of programming and the development of programming competencies are central to learning computer science.

This 10-credit level 8 special purpose award provides learners with the opportunity to further enhance their knowledge of the core concepts of abstraction, decomposition and algorithmic development. In addition, students will develop the necessary technical competencies required to apply these concepts using a modern programming language to solve non-trivial problems and evaluate their solutions.

1	Coding with Syntax The study of programming and the development of programming competencies are central to learning computer science. This module provides learners with the opportunity to further enhance their knowledge of the core concepts of abstraction, decomposition and algorithmic development. In addition, students will develop the necessary technical competencies required to apply these concepts using a modern programming language to solve non-trivial problems and evaluate their solutions. Learning Outcomes 1. Apply computational thinking to design algorithmic solutions for non-trivial problems. 2. Develop algorithmic solutions by applying a structured approach to problem solving using programming constructs of sequence, selection, repetition, functions, and data types. 3. Utilise data structures to efficiently store, sort and retrieve data. 4. Validate and verify the correctness of a software implementation using modern debugging and testing techniques. 5. Measure and evaluate the algorithmic performance of a software implementation.	10	Mandatory

Examination and Assessment

Note: Where assessment on the programme involves examinations, these are held on campus or at another exam venue in the Republic of Ireland. There are typically two exam periods: January and May. Times scheduled for examinations (face to face / online exams ) are in GMT.
