Commuter Student Project

Commuter students in higher education institutions in Ireland. A student-centred, whole provider approach to improve student experiences and outcomes

ATU GM Campuses

In 2024/25 research was undertaken in the higher education institutions in the technological sector in Ireland to explore commuter students’ experiences and to consider changes that would improve their experiences and outcomes. This project was led by Prof. Liz Thomas (University of York) and supported by N-TUTORR under the Student Empowerment national work program co-led by Dr Carina Ginty (ATU) and Dr Moira Maguire (DKIT).

It addressed the questions:

How does being a commuter student impact on student experiences and outcomes in higher education institutes in Ireland?

How can higher education institutions improve the experience and outcomes of commuter students?

Download Report

A new study highlights the challenges faced by commuter students in Technological Universities and Institutes of Technology across Ireland. The study outlines recommendations to create a more supportive environment for students who commute to and from their place of education, to address impacts on their studies, well-being and finances.
