Tell us a little bit about yourself and what led you to choose your course:
My name is Joel, and I have always been passionate about supporting others and making a difference in people’s lives. Becoming a nurse has allowed me to fulfil that passion, and I am grateful for the opportunity to do so every day. The journey to becoming a nurse was not easy, but it was definitely worth it. Providing care, comfort, and support to those in need is truly rewarding and fulfilling. I am grateful for the opportunity to be a nurse, and I look forward to continuing this journey for many years to come.
What about the course did you particularly enjoy?
The hands-on experience during my placement was invaluable, as it allowed me to apply the knowledge and skills I had learnt in a real-world setting. Working alongside experienced health professionals not only reinforced my understanding of the course but also gave me a glimpse into what my future career could look like.
What is the best thing about the course that new applicants should know?
RNID is not just a job – it is a rewarding and fulfilling career that allows you to positively impact the lives of others while also growing personally and professionally. You learn how to effectively communicate with individuals who have different communication needs and develop empathy and understanding to become an advocate for accessibility and inclusion. Furthermore, a career in RNID can serve as a stepping stone towards achieving your long-term goals in healthcare and social services.
Any favourite modules during your time studying?
Person-centred and empowering support module, intellectual disabilities studies module, clinical skills module and leadership module. These modules have deepened my understanding and challenged me to think in new ways. This shift in thinking has not only improved my practice but has also enriched the lives of those I support.
What key skills did you learn while studying at ATU that have influenced your career?
During my studies at ATU St. Agelas, I developed numerous skills, including critical thinking, time management, kindness, assertiveness, and clinical skills, to name just a few. Overall, these skills have been instrumental in shaping me into a well-rounded individual, capable of navigating various challenges with grace and proficiency
Can you share some details of your career path to date?
I am currently studying postgraduate at UL. I have attended some leadership training that has helped me in my day-to-day life and, of course, in my work as a staff nurse. I am now a preceptor supporting students in placement to gain skills and knowledge.
What does your current role involve?
I currently work as a staff nurse in a community group home, where I support the service co-creators in engaging in meaningful activities, supporting them to live the way they want to live, navigating their immediate community, and advocating for their unmet needs.
What advice would you share with our current students considering a career in your field?
If I can do it, anyone can. The challenging part is taking the bold step to begin. The rewards of being an RNID outweigh the difficulties. Stay organised, ask questions, and seek support. Adopt effective study habits, avoid cutting corners, and form a study group with like-minded individuals. I would encourage anyone considering a career as an RNID to give it a try.
What did you like best about studying at ATU?
The scenic environment of ATU St Angela’s creates an exceptional atmosphere for studying. Access to the school facilities and services is convenient, and the team of lecturers is top-notch. The small group classes foster a collaborative atmosphere where students work together to support one another.
What advice would you give a first-year student starting in ATU Sligo?
Make the most of your time at school by taking advantage of the services available whenever you feel you need support. Avoid procrastination and resist the temptation to prioritize social activities over your academic responsibilities. Remember, you are preparing for a prestigious profession.
